Apple‘s latest iPad refresh brings more than just performance boosts and sleeker designs. Hidden within the software lies a new Battery Health menu, empowering users with unprecedented insights into their tablet’s power source and tools to extend its lifespan.

Nestled in the Settings app of the newest iPad Air and iPad Pro models, a dedicated “Battery Health” section now graces the display. This menu offers a wealth of information previously reserved for iPhone users, lifting the veil on crucial battery metrics.

At a glance, users can assess their battery’s condition with a simple “Normal” or otherwise status indicator. But the real power lies in the granular details: Maximum Capacity, a measure of the battery’s current maximum relative to when it was new, and the all-important Cycle Count, revealing the number of complete charge cycles the battery has endured.

Apple’s attention to detail extends beyond mere numbers. The Battery Health menu also reveals the battery’s production date and the date it was first pressed into service, offering a glimpse into the tablet’s history and potential remaining lifespan.

Perhaps the most intriguing addition is the “80% Limit” charging optimization option. Previously exclusive to the iPhone 15 series, this feature allows users to cap their iPad’s charge at 80%, reducing the time the battery spends at maximum capacity – a known contributor to battery degradation.

Apple’s rationale is straightforward: by minimizing the time a battery spends fully charged, its wear and tear can be mitigated, potentially extending its lifespan. This option is distinct from the existing “Optimized Battery Charging” feature, which intelligently delays charging past 80% based on the device’s charging routine.

While the 80% Limit may impose some sacrifices in terms of available runtime, it offers a compelling trade-off for users seeking to maximize their iPad’s battery longevity.

The introduction of the Battery Health menu signifies a broader shift within Apple’s philosophy, embracing transparency and granting users greater control over their devices’ inner workings.

By demystifying the battery’s condition and offering tools to actively manage its health, Apple empowers iPad owners to make informed decisions and potentially extend the lifespan of their investments.
