The image shows a stylized notepad or document icon. It features a light blue notepad with spiral binding at the top, represented by four dark blue circles. The notepad has three horizontal dark blue lines representing text or content. The notepad appears to be slightly tilted, with a white layer and a brown layer visible underneath it, creating a stacked effect. The background is split diagonally with a mint green color on the left and a dark navy blue on the right. This minimalist design resembles a modern interpretation of a notepad or note-taking app icon, though it differs somewhat from the traditional Microsoft Windows Notepad icon.

Dark mode isn’t just a modern trend—it’s a practical design choice that can help reduce eye strain, improve focus, and give your desktop a sleek, modern look. For many users, the idea of switching to dark mode is irresistible, yet finding that option in every app can sometimes be a challenge. In Windows 11, however, even a simple text editor like Notepad has joined the dark side, offering a few straightforward steps to transform your workspace.

Dark mode has surged in popularity over the last few years, thanks to its blend of aesthetics and functionality. Studies have shown that a darker interface can reduce eye fatigue during extended periods of screen time—a benefit welcomed by students, professionals, and night owls alike. While many applications and operating systems now feature a dark theme, the journey to enable this setting in some apps, like Notepad, wasn’t always as intuitive.

Dark mode is more than just a visual treat. It plays a subtle but important role in managing screen brightness and reducing blue light exposure, which can disrupt your sleep cycle if you’re staring at your screen late into the night.

Notepad in Windows 11

With Windows 11, Microsoft has streamlined many user experiences, including customizing the look and feel of native apps like Notepad. Gone are the days when switching themes meant diving into complex settings menus or installing third-party tweaks. Now, you can switch to dark mode with just a few clicks.

Here’s how to enable Notepad dark mode

  • Open the Notepad application on your Windows 11 device. If you’re a fan of shortcuts, you can quickly access it by typing “Notepad” in the Start menu search bar.
  • Once Notepad is open, look to the top-right corner of the window. You’ll see a small gear icon—click on it to open the Settings menu.
  • In the Settings menu, locate the option labeled “App theme.” Here, you will be presented with a couple of choices:
    • Dark: Selecting this option will instantly change Notepad’s interface to a dark theme.
    • Use system setting: This option allows Notepad to automatically align with your system’s overall theme settings. So if your Windows 11 system is set to dark mode, Notepad will follow suit.
The image shows the Settings screen of the Windows Notepad application. At the top is a title bar with the Notepad icon, "Notepad" text, and standard window controls (minimize, maximize, and close buttons). Below that is a large "Settings" heading. Under the "Appearance" section, there's an "App theme" option with three radio button choices: "Light" (currently selected), "Dark" (unselected), and "Use system setting" (unselected). The Light option has a blue filled circle indicating it's the active selection. Below that is a "Text Formatting" section with a "Font" dropdown menu and a "Word wrap" toggle switch that is currently turned ON. The Word wrap option includes descriptive text: "Fit text within window by default". This settings panel appears to be showing how to customize Notepad's appearance, with the option to enable dark mode by selecting the "Dark" radio button (though it's currently set to Light mode).

These simple steps can make a world of difference if you spend long hours writing, coding, or simply jotting down notes.

Why switch to dark mode?

Beyond the aesthetic appeal, there are several reasons to consider enabling dark mode in your daily workflow:

  • Reduced eye strain: The darker background minimizes glare and can help reduce the strain on your eyes, especially in low-light environments.
  • Battery efficiency: On devices with OLED or AMOLED displays, dark mode can lead to improved battery performance since these screens use less power to display darker colors.
  • Enhanced focus: For many, dark mode provides a distraction-free interface that helps keep your attention on the task at hand.

The ability to easily toggle dark mode in Notepad on Windows 11 is just one of the many small, thoughtful changes Microsoft has introduced to enhance user experience. Whether you’re a night-time writer, a dedicated programmer, or someone who just appreciates a cleaner interface, switching to dark mode is an excellent way to make your digital workspace more comfortable and visually appealing.

So next time you fire up Notepad, take a moment to explore the settings. A simple click might just transform your writing experience, turning a routine task into something a bit more stylish and a lot easier on the eyes.
