OpenAI has introduced an innovative way for people to interact with their popular AI, ChatGPT, by simply picking up a phone and dialing 1-800-CHATGPT. This feature, unveiled during what OpenAI playfully termed as the “10th day of ‘ship-mas'”, offers up to 15 minutes of free AI conversation per month, accessible only in the US through a traditional phone call or via WhatsApp globally.

The project, as explained by OpenAI’s Chief Product Officer Kevin Weil during a livestream, was developed in just a few weeks, showcasing the company’s swift pivot towards making AI interaction more accessible. By dialing 1-800-242-8478, users can engage in voice conversations with ChatGPT, a feature that uses OpenAI’s Realtime API. For those not in the US or preferring text, the WhatsApp integration powered by the more lightweight GPT-4o mini model provides a similar experience.

This initiative by OpenAI aims to democratize AI technology, offering a “low-cost way to try it out through familiar channels,” as per the company’s statement. It’s designed particularly for those new to AI or without consistent access to high-speed internet or smart devices. However, for users looking for more extensive interaction, customization, and longer usage, OpenAI suggests sticking to ChatGPT’s traditional online platforms.

The introduction of this phone-based feature isn’t without historical precedents. Back in 2007, Google launched a service named GOOG-411, providing free voice directory assistance. The service was surprisingly discontinued in 2010, with speculations suggesting Google used the data collected to enhance its speech recognition algorithms. Google‘s VP Marissa Mayer had once highlighted the importance of gathering a vast array of voice samples to train AI for better accuracy in understanding human speech.

However, OpenAI has explicitly stated through spokesperson Taya Christianson that they will not use the voice data from these calls to train their large language models, addressing potential privacy concerns head-on. This assurance might put users at ease who are wary of how their voice data might be utilized.

The rollout of 1-800-CHATGPT is part of a broader strategy by OpenAI to expand the reach of AI technology. Amidst a competitive landscape where companies like Amazon-backed Anthropic, Elon Musk‘s xAI, Google, Meta, Microsoft, and Amazon are all vying for dominance in the burgeoning generative AI market, this move could help OpenAI capture a wider audience, including those less tech-savvy or digitally connected.

For many, this development represents a significant step towards making AI not just a tool for tech enthusiasts but a part of everyday life for the average person. Whether it’s asking for a recipe, getting quick facts, or just engaging in conversation, the simplicity of dialing a number to interact with an AI might just change how we perceive and use technology.
