How to create standalone apps from any web page

We have all lost important pages in a sea of dozens of open browser tabs, but there is a surprisingly simple built-in fix.

We have all been there. You find yourself opening the exact same tabs every single morning, pinning them to the edge of your browser, or digging through a chaotic bookmarks bar just to check your favorite daily reads, productivity apps, or content dashboards. It is a tiny, repetitive friction point in our digital lives that we tend to just live with. But browser developers have spent years quietly refining ways to bridge the gap between heavy web applications and our everyday desktop experience, and one of the simplest solutions is hiding right in plain sight inside Google Chrome.

Creating a dedicated shortcut for any website on your mobile/computer turns an ordinary web page into something that feels and acts remarkably like a standalone app. Instead of getting lost in a sea of dozens of open browser tabs, your favorite destination gets its own clean window, a dedicated icon on your taskbar or desktop, and zero distracting address bars or bookmark menus to clutter your focus.

The process itself takes about five seconds. If you are sitting at your computer and running Chrome, you simply navigate to the website you want to enshrine as a shortcut. From there, head up to the top right corner of the browser window and click on the three-dot menu icon for More options. Hover down to Cast, save, and share, and then click on Create shortcut. A small dialogue box will pop up, giving you the chance to either stick with the default page title or rename it whatever you like. Hit the Create button, and you are done.

What happens next is where the real utility kicks in. Chrome doesn’t just drop a static internet link onto your screen; it packages the site into a progressive web app shortcut. If you check your desktop or application menu, you will see it sitting there with its proper favicon. When you launch it, it opens in its own streamlined, borderless window separate from your main browser session. If you happen to be someone who relies heavily on specific web tools throughout the day—whether it is a project management board, a writing platform, or a music stream—pulling them out of the browser tabs and giving them independent shortcuts can completely transform how your workspace feels. It declutters your digital headspace, keeps your primary browser window reserved for active research and browsing, and makes your most-visited digital haunts feel genuinely like home.
