Marvel Studios just dropped one of the biggest surprises at San Diego Comic-Con 2026: Ryan Gosling is riding into the MCU as Ghost Rider. The flame-skulled Spirit of Vengeance is officially coming to the big screen in a standalone film directed by Shawn Levy, with a 2028 release date locked in.

The announcement came during Marvel’s packed Hall H panel, where studio president Kevin Feige took the stage to kick off the event with a bombshell. Footage of the official Ghost Rider logo flashed onscreen before Gosling himself walked out to confirm he’d be playing Johnny Blaze, the iconic motorcycle-riding antihero.

Feige then revealed that Shawn Levy, fresh off directing the record-breaking Deadpool & Wolverine, will helm the project. It marks the second straight collaboration between Levy and Gosling after the pair teamed up for the upcoming Star Wars: Starfighter, due out in May 2027.

Gosling has built a reputation for picking unconventional roles and bringing a grounded, almost melancholic edge to his characters—think Drive, Blade Runner 2049, and The Gray Man. That tonal sensibility fits Ghost Rider perfectly. The character isn’t your typical quippy superhero; he’s a haunted stuntman bound by a demonic pact, wrestling with guilt and vengeance.

During the panel, Gosling said Levy convinced him to take the role while they were filming Star Wars: Starfighter together. The actor called Ghost Rider a part he’s wanted for years, suggesting this isn’t a last-minute Marvel pitch but a passion project that’s been brewing behind the scenes.

Ghost Rider has a complicated history on film. The Nicolas Cage-led Ghost Rider (2007) and its sequel Spirit of Vengeance (2011) were commercially successful but critically divisive, often criticized for leaning too hard into campy CGI and tonal inconsistency. Development on the character dates back to the early ’90s, with multiple false starts, director changes, and even interest from Johnny Depp before Cage ultimately took the role.

Bringing Ghost Rider into the MCU gives Marvel Studios a chance to reframe the mythos with tighter world-building and a more coherent supernatural corner of the universe. With Levy’s experience balancing irreverence and emotion in Deadpool & Wolverine, and Gosling’s knack for understated intensity, the new film could finally deliver the moody, character-driven take fans have wanted.

What we know about the film

  • Star: Ryan Gosling as Johnny Blaze / Ghost Rider
  • Director: Shawn Levy (Deadpool & Wolverine, Star Wars: Starfighter)
  • Writer: Jonathan Tropper (Banshee, Heels)
  • Release: Theatrical launch in 2028

Marvel hasn’t disclosed plot details yet, but the solo format suggests a focus on Blaze’s origin and internal struggle rather than an immediate team-up. That said, Ghost Rider’s supernatural ties make him a natural fit for future crossovers with characters like Doctor Strange, Blade, or even the rumored Midnight Sons lineup.

Where this fits in the MCU

Ghost Rider‘s arrival expands Marvel’s supernatural slate at a time when the studio is clearly investing in darker, R-rated-adjacent storytelling. After the success of Deadpool & Wolverine and the upcoming Blade reboot, Ghost Rider could anchor a new lane of MCU projects that lean into horror-tinged action without sacrificing character depth.

The 2028 window also gives the production room to build out the visual language—especially the Hellfire effects and motorcycle transformations—without rushing to meet an earlier deadline. With modern VFX and a director who already knows how to work within Marvel’s ecosystem, the technical execution should be a major step up from earlier attempts.
