David Jonsson is the new Black Panther in Coogler’s 2028 sequel

The next Black Panther won't replace T'Challa—he'll be T'Challa's son, grown up and stepping into a role that carries both legacy and pressure.

Ryan Coogler just did what Marvel fans have been waiting years to hear: he stood on the Hall H stage at San Diego Comic-Con 2026 and announced a third Black Panther film, with a new lead stepping into the role. The actor is David Jonsson, best known recently for Alien: Romulus and Stephen King’s The Long Walk, and he’ll play an adult Prince T’Challa II—the son of Chadwick Boseman’s T’Challa—coming of age as Wakanda’s next hero. The movie is officially slated for December 15, 2028, and will be shot entirely on large-format celluloid film, a first for the MCU, with Coogler promising a textured, IMAX-ready cinematic experience.

The announcement landed during Marvel Studios’ massive Hall H panel, led by Kevin Feige. Coogler took the stage alongside returning franchise stars Letitia Wright (Shuri) and Winston Duke (M’Baku), then introduced Jonsson to a roaring crowd. In that emotional reveal, Jonsson smiled, held his hand to his chest, and said he couldn’t believe it was real—then thanked Marvel for the opportunity. Coogler framed the story as a natural continuation: the child introduced at the end of Wakanda Forever has grown up, and now the franchise will follow him as he comes of age.

Jonsson isn’t stepping in as a replacement for Boseman’s T’Challa; he’s playing the next generation—Prince T’Challa II, the son of Boseman’s character and Nakia (Lupita Nyong’o), first introduced as a young boy in the 2022 sequel. That distinction matters. It keeps Boseman’s legacy intact while letting the narrative move forward through a character the audience already knows and cares about.

For Marvel, the casting also signals a shift toward character-driven continuity rather than a hard reboot. Wakanda Forever grossed $859 million worldwide and delivered one of the strongest post-pandemic openings, proving the franchise still has massive pull. The first Black Panther, in 2018, crossed $1.3 billion globally and became the first superhero film nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars, winning three awards including Best Costume Design, Best Production Design, and Best Original Score. Jonsson inherits a franchise with both commercial momentum and cultural weight.

What we know about the film so far

Coogler confirmed the title simply as Black Panther 3, with a theatrical release on December 15, 2028. He’ll direct, with Wright and Duke returning in central roles. The story will focus on Jonsson’s character growing into his role, with Coogler emphasizing the “comes of age” arc in his on-stage remarks.

A notable technical detail: Black Panther 3 will be shot entirely on large-format celluloid film—a deliberate break from the MCU’s usual digital workflow. Coogler has long been an advocate for film, and this choice lines up with his broader push for rich, tactile visuals tailored to IMAX screens. Structurally, the film is positioned as a standalone pillar arriving after Avengers: Secret Wars (December 2027), which sets the stage for the next chapter of the MCU.

Where the franchise has been

The Black Panther saga has always been about more than superhero spectacle. The 2018 original was a cultural milestone, blending Afrofuturist world-building with a grounded story about identity, responsibility, and power. After Boseman’s death in 2020, Wakanda Forever re-centered the narrative around grief, legacy, and Shuri’s journey—eventually revealing that T’Challa and Nakia had a son, Toussaint, who carries the name T’Challa.

Wakanda Forever earned $859.2 million globally, with $453.8 million domestically and $405.4 million internationally, and opened to $181.3 million in the U.S. Angela Bassett’s supporting-actress Oscar nomination marked the first time any performer in a Marvel film received an Academy Award nod. That critical Recognition, paired with box-office strength, gave Marvel a clear path to continue the story without erasing Boseman’s impact.

Black Panther 3 arrives in theaters on December 15, 2028, one year after Avengers: Secret Wars. Between now and then, expect more details on the villain, supporting cast, and how Wakanda fits into the post–Secret Wars MCU. For now, the big takeaway is simple: Coogler is back, Jonsson is the new Black Panther, and the story is set to follow T’Challa’s son as he grows into the role fans have been waiting to see.
