Apple’s latest update to its MacBook lineup brings a noteworthy change: the RAM in the base MacBook Air models is now doubled to 16GB across both M2 and M3 models. This boost aligns Apple’s entry-level laptops with the rest of its recent computers, which all now feature at least 16GB RAM. The price of the MacBook Air, however, remains unchanged, with the 13-inch version starting at $999 and the larger 15-inch at $1,299. Previously, upgrading to 16GB required an extra $200, so this move effectively makes Apple’s more affordable models competitive against other high-performing laptops in the market without an added price tag.
This shift reflects Apple’s broader vision for macOS and the increasing demand for processing power from AI applications, particularly with the company’s new Apple Intelligence features. For tasks such as content creation, multitasking, and using AI tools, more memory can make a substantial difference, especially as macOS applications grow more complex. The extra RAM should noticeably improve the experience for MacBook Air users, who often opt for the device for everyday productivity and creative workflows.
Alongside the RAM update, Apple’s new M3 chip promises even better energy efficiency and performance, supporting up to 18 hours of battery life.
