Apple today made waves at the WWDC 2023 by unveiling a remarkable addition to its MacBook Air lineup. The company introduced a brand-new MacBook Air model featuring an expansive 15.3-inch Liquid Retina display, and powered by Apple’s cutting-edge M2 processor. With its sleek design and powerful performance, Apple claims it to be the world’s thinnest 15-inch laptop.

Apple unveils new MacBook Air with 15.3-inch display and M2 chip

The latest MacBook Air, measuring a mere 11.5mm in thickness and weighing only 3.3 pounds (1.5 grams), sets new standards for portability and convenience. Thanks to the groundbreaking M2 chip, it boasts impressive speed gains, surpassing even the fastest Intel-based MacBook Air model by a staggering 12 times. Additionally, Apple proudly asserts that its new laptop is twice as fast as its closest competitors.

The fanless design of the new MacBook Air accommodates a host of cutting-edge features. It incorporates a high-definition 1080p FaceTime camera for crystal-clear video calls, a three-microphone array for enhanced audio quality, and an all-new six-speaker system. The speaker system comprises two tweeters and two sets of force canceling woofers, providing users with an immersive audio experience enhanced by spatial audio technology. Moreover, Apple claims that the laptop can deliver up to 18 hours of battery life on a single charge, ensuring users can stay productive and entertained throughout the day.

The new MacBook Air also brings back MagSafe, a beloved feature of previous MacBook models. It boasts two Thunderbolt ports, allowing seamless connectivity with various accessories and support for an external 6K display. Apple hasn’t forgotten the classic 3.5mm headphone jack either, ensuring users can continue to use their favorite wired headphones effortlessly.

In terms of the display, the new MacBook Air excels with a peak brightness of up to 500 nits and support for an astounding 1 billion colors. It offers twice the resolution and is 25% brighter compared to the best-selling Intel Core i7 PC laptop in its class. Such advancements in display technology promise vibrant visuals and a truly immersive viewing experience.

Under the hood, the M2 chip powers the MacBook Air’s impressive performance. It features an 8-core CPU, including four high-performance cores and four energy-efficient cores, ensuring optimal power usage based on the task at hand. The 10-core GPU enhances graphics-intensive applications, while the 16-core Neural Engine brings machine learning capabilities to the laptop. Additionally, the M2 chip supports up to 24GB of fast unified memory and delivers a remarkable memory bandwidth of 100GB/s.

John Ternus, Apple’s senior vice president of Hardware Engineering, expressed excitement about the latest addition to the MacBook Air lineup. Ternus stated, “We’re thrilled to introduce the first 15-inch MacBook Air. With its incredible performance and striking design, the new MacBook Air is the world’s best 15-inch laptop. And it’s only possible with Apple silicon.” Ternus emphasized the laptop’s features, such as the expansive Liquid Retina display, slim and fanless design, extended battery life, and immersive six-speaker sound system, as key differentiators in the market.

15.3-inch M2 MacBook Air price & availability

Continuing the tradition of offering a range of color options, the new MacBook Air is available in four variants: Silver, Space Gray, Starlight, and Midnight. The base model starts at $1,299, with a discounted price of $1,199 offered to education customers. Pre-orders for the laptop are already open, and deliveries are scheduled to commence next week. Additionally, Apple has also adjusted the starting price of the 13-inch MacBook Air with the M2 chip, lowering it to $1,099, a $100 reduction from its previous price.
