Google is making a big push to integrate generative AI into its suite of productivity tools, including Gmail, Docs, Sheets, Meet, Chat, and Slides. This move is part of the company’s ongoing efforts to keep up with OpenAI, which shook up the AI industry with the introduction of its conversational bot, ChatGPT. While Google’s initial response to its Bard AI was lackluster, the company is now taking a more aggressive approach by infusing AI into all of its products.

According to Google, users will be able to do everything from drafting and replying to emails to brainstorming and proofreading text documents. Slides will even be able to generate images and videos automatically. Meanwhile, Sheets will be able to create formulas autonomously, Meet will automate transcription notes, and Chat will enable workflows for getting things done.

One of the most intriguing features is the Rewrite function in Docs, which will allow users to rework their draft text using Google’s generative AI. Users will simply need to type the subject of their assignment into the page, and the system will quickly generate additional text. There’s even an “I’m feeling lucky” option in Gmail that could prove helpful for HR departments.

However, following the missteps with Bard, Google is emphasizing that its AI products will be built within the bounds of its AI Principles. “AI is no replacement for the ingenuity, creativity, and smarts of real people,” said Johanna Voolich Wright, VP of Product at Google Workspace. “Sometimes the AI gets things wrong, sometimes it delights you with something offbeat, and oftentimes it requires guidance.” The company is committed to ensuring that its AI remains beneficial and safe for all users.

English language users in the US can expect to see the new AI-enabled Workspace suite rolling out by the end of the month, with additional languages and regions to follow. With this new push, Google is clearly demonstrating its commitment to staying competitive in the AI industry, while also emphasizing the importance of responsible AI development.
