Flipboard is bringing its signature magazine-style reading experience to Apple’s new iPhone Duo, with redesigned layouts, dual-pane reading, and support for Continuous Flow that adapts the app as users open and close the device. The update gives the news-reading app a more natural way to take advantage of the foldable’s larger screen without abandoning the familiar experience of using an iPhone with one hand.

Announced on October 23, the redesigned Flipboard builds on the app’s history with Apple devices. Once named iPad App of the Year, Flipboard became known for its tactile page-turning interface and magazine-inspired presentation of news, photos, and videos. The iPhone Duo gives the company another opportunity to adapt that approach to a new form factor.

Flipboard changes as you open the iPhone Duo

With the iPhone Duo closed, Flipboard retains a compact interface designed for one-handed use. Readers can flip through stories in their For You feed, browse favorite topics and sources using a customizable carousel, and explore additional content through an expanded Explore view.

Flipboard’s For You feed on the iPhone Duo features a dog story alongside additional news and product headlines in a magazine-style layout.

The familiar features remain, too. Users can open articles, share stories with friends, and save interesting content to their own Flipboard Magazines using the app’s plus button.

Opening the iPhone Duo reveals the more substantial changes. Flipboard uses the expanded display for full-screen layouts and dual-pane designs that give stories, photographs, and videos more room. The interface adapts as users move between the device’s different modes, rather than treating the larger screen as little more than an enlarged version of the standard iPhone layout.

That transition is where Apple’s Continuous Flow feature comes in. Flipboard can resize and rearrange its interface as the device changes modes while keeping readers on the same article or video. In practice, that means users can open the phone to continue reading on the larger display without having to find their place again.

Flipboard adapts its baby raccoon story to both the closed and open iPhone Duo, showing a compact article card on the left and an immersive full-screen layout on the right.

The layouts also change as readers turn pages, creating a more varied presentation instead of forcing every story into an identical template. Flipboard says the goal is to make its collection of news and other content feel more immersive while retaining the sense of control that comes with browsing a magazine.

A slideshow mode brings back a familiar feature

Flipboard has another addition for the iPhone Duo: a slideshow mode that slowly pans across images and headlines from the user’s For You feed.

The feature is designed to run when the device is positioned in Tent mode, turning the screen into a changing display of stories and visuals. Users can also activate the slideshow manually through the app’s three-dot menu, according to Flipboard’s announcement.

Flipboard’s magazine-style interface displays a travel story on an iPhone Duo propped up in Tent mode, with a headline and landscape photograph arranged side by side.

The feature echoes the headline screen savers once available on Mac desktops, as well as the Ken Burns-style animated covers associated with Flipboard’s earlier magazine experience. It gives the device’s hands-free viewing position a more deliberate use beyond simply propping up the screen.

For readers who prefer to control when the slideshow appears, Flipboard also describes an option to enable it through profile settings. Once configured, the slideshow can start automatically when the iPhone Duo is placed in Tent mode.

Flipboard is leaning into the iPhone Duo’s design

The redesigned app is part of a broader question facing developers building for the iPhone Duo: how to make the most of a device that changes its available screen space depending on how it is used.

Simply expanding an existing phone interface would miss much of the appeal of a foldable device. Flipboard’s approach instead combines a familiar compact reading experience with layouts that take advantage of the opened display, using Continuous Flow to connect those two states.

That strategy also plays to the app’s strengths. Flipboard has long emphasized visual presentation and editorial discovery rather than displaying a straightforward list of headlines. The iPhone Duo’s larger screen gives it more room to make that experience feel like browsing a digital magazine.

Flipboard says its content comes from thousands of sources selected by its editorial team, with stories spanning individual interests as well as major news events. The redesigned interface preserves that approach while giving readers a new way to move through the material.

The updated experience is available in Flipboard version 4.3.73. Users can update the app through the App Store or Google Play, although the new dual-pane layouts and device-specific transitions are intended for the iPhone Duo.

For Flipboard, the appeal of the new device is not just the extra screen space. It is the opportunity to make reading feel different again, bringing the app’s page-turning roots into a device that can switch between a conventional phone and a larger, book-like display.
