ASUS has opened Canadian preorders for the ROG Rapture GT-BN98 Pro, putting a $1,299.99 price on one of the first consumer routers built around WiFi 8. Canada is getting the flagship model ahead of ASUS’s wider October release, while U.S. availability and pricing have yet to be announced.
That price immediately puts the GT-BN98 Pro in rarefied territory. It costs more than many premium WiFi 7 routers, and it is clearly not meant for someone simply trying to eliminate a weak signal in a small apartment. ASUS is targeting the kind of household where a fast fiber connection, multiple gaming systems, local storage, 4K streaming, video calls, and a growing collection of smart-home devices all compete for bandwidth at once.
The interesting part is that this is not just another “bigger number equals better router” launch. WiFi 8, formally tied to the developing IEEE 802.11bn standard, is expected to focus on ultra-high reliability: steadier connections, lower latency in crowded environments, and better performance at the edges of a network. The idea is to make WiFi feel more dependable when real life gets messy, whether that means neighbors’ networks causing interference, a house full of connected devices, or someone walking between mesh nodes during a video call.
ASUS is bringing that future-facing pitch to market before WiFi 8 client devices are widely available. The company says the router can still deliver gains with current WiFi 7 hardware, while future support for technologies such as Unequal Modulation and Non-Primary Channel Access should help improve stability and manage interference as compatible devices arrive. Those are promising claims, but buyers should remember that the standard is still under development and that the biggest benefits will depend on future phones, PCs, consoles, and other client hardware.

The GT-BN98 Pro earns its “Pro” label with an unusually loaded specification sheet. ASUS rates its quad-band wireless setup at up to 30,000 Mbps of combined throughput, backed by a 2.6GHz quad-core processor and 2GB of RAM. As always, that throughput figure is a theoretical total across bands and devices, not a promise that one laptop will reach 30Gbps in a typical home.

More practical are the wired connections. The router includes two 10Gbps Ethernet ports and four 2.5Gbps LAN ports, giving it plenty of room for a multi-gig internet plan, a gaming PC, a NAS, a high-speed switch, or wired backhaul to another networking device. For creators who routinely move large video files across a local network, or gamers trying to avoid wireless variables entirely, that flexibility could matter much more than any WiFi headline.
ASUS has also gone all-in on the industrial design. The router uses 16 antenna elements distributed through eight external antennas, and its large chassis includes a thermal system designed to maintain capacity and coverage during sustained heavy use. It has the unmistakable look of a ROG product: big, angular, and not especially interested in blending into the background.
At $1,299.99, though, the purchase case is mostly about being early. Buyers are paying for powerful networking hardware today, but also for the expectation that it will be more useful once WiFi 8 devices begin to show up. IEEE’s timeline for the 802.11bn work points toward final approval in 2028, so this is not a conventional “buy it now for a finished standard” situation.
For many homes, a strong WiFi 7 router will remain the sensible option for the next few years, especially if internet service is limited to 1Gbps and most devices still use WiFi 6 or older standards. But for enthusiasts with multi-gig fiber, demanding local-network needs, and little interest in replacing a flagship router again soon, ASUS is offering an unusually early path into the WiFi 8 era.
The Canadian launch is also only the beginning of ASUS’s broader plan. The company says the ZenWiFi BN12, a 12-stream tri-band WiFi 8 mesh system designed for large homes, will arrive in October with claimed coverage of up to 7,000 square feet and dual 10Gbps ports for wired backhaul. ASUS has also said its WiFi 8 routers and mesh systems will receive wider global availability beginning that month.
For now, the ROG Rapture GT-BN98 Pro is best understood as a costly but technically ambitious first-generation product. Its $1,299.99 Canadian price makes it a luxury purchase, yet it also signals how ASUS expects the next networking battle to be fought: not just with higher peak speeds, but with WiFi that stays stable when every device, every room, and every person in the house is online.
