Netflix is officially heading back to the world of “13 Going on 30,” with a new reboot in the works — and yes, Jennifer Garner is involved behind the scenes as an executive producer.

The new film will star Emily Bader and Logan Lerman, with Brett Haley directing. Haley recently scored a hit at Netflix with the rom-com “People We Meet on Vacation,” which also starred Bader and spent several weeks on the streamer’s global Top 10 list, so this is very much a reunion project for the duo. According to Deadline, Haley and Bader were keen to work together again and had Lerman in mind from the start as her romantic counterpart.

Story details are being kept under wraps for now, but the creative team already has solid rom-com credentials. The script comes from Hannah Marks, with revisions by Flora Greeson, whose previous work includes “The Princess Diaries 3.” Producing are Joe Roth and Jeff Kirschenbaum for RK Films, joined by executive producers Donna Roth, Susan Arnold, Scott Hemming for Revolution Studios, Alyssa Altman for RK Films, Marks, and Garner herself.

For anyone who somehow missed the original, “13 Going on 30” was released by Columbia Pictures in April 2004 and followed awkward teen Jenna Rink, who makes a wish to be “thirty, flirty and thriving” and wakes up as her 30-year-old self. The film, directed by Gary Winick and starring Garner opposite Mark Ruffalo, blended fantasy, romance, and early-2000s magazine-world drama, going on to earn around $96 million at the global box office and becoming a sleepover and cable staple in the years that followed. Its longevity as a comfort movie — from the “Thriller” dance scene to the dollhouse finale — is a big reason a reboot has always felt like a “when,” not “if.”

Garner hasn’t exactly left the property behind either. She recently helped executive produce a stage musical version of “13 Going on 30,” which premiered at Manchester Opera House in September, so this Netflix film continues her evolution from star to steward of the IP. Having her on board is also likely to reassure fans who are understandably wary of yet another reboot touching a millennial classic.

The casting of Bader and Lerman feels very intentionally aimed at today’s streaming audience. Bader is becoming a go-to Netflix lead: beyond “People We Meet on Vacation,” she’s set to play soccer legend Mia Hamm in the streamer’s upcoming sports drama “The 99’ers,” based on the U.S. women’s national team. Lerman, meanwhile, has been rebuilding his profile with indie projects like the dark comedy “Oh, Hi!” and a turn in Season 5 of Hulu’s hit mystery-comedy “Only Murders in the Building.” Together, they give Netflix a fresh, age-appropriate pairing that can nod to the original while speaking to younger viewers who discovered the movie on streaming rather than in theaters.

Director Brett Haley is also becoming a familiar name in Netflix’s romance lane. Beyond “People We Meet on Vacation,” he previously directed the YA romance “All the Bright Places” and drama “All Together Now” for the platform, so he’s clearly seen as a safe pair of hands for emotional, character-driven stories. In a statement to Deadline, Haley called the 2004 film “one of those rare, perfect films” and admitted that stepping into a reimagining of it comes with “tremendous responsibility,” which is exactly what longtime fans probably want to hear.

What’s still unknown is how closely this reboot will mirror the original plot and how much it will lean into a 2020s setting — social media, influencer culture, and a very different magazine industry give the filmmakers plenty of room to update Jenna’s world. Fan reaction online is already mixed: some are excited about the Bader–Lerman pairing and Garner’s involvement, while others are hitting that familiar “reboot fatigue” wall and openly wondering if Hollywood can leave at least a few beloved rom-coms untouched. But given the way the original keeps finding new audiences on streaming, Netflix clearly sees “13 Going on 30” as a piece of feel-good IP with plenty of life left in it.
