JBL is taking a bigger swing at the connected-home speaker market with JBL Cove, a new family of Wi-Fi speakers designed to bring synchronized music, room-by-room playback, and Dolby Atmos sound under one roof. The lineup includes the compact Cove M1, the portable Cove P1, and the larger Cove X1, with U.S. availability set for September 13.

For years, JBL has been one of the most recognizable names in portable Bluetooth speakers, the kind people take to a backyard cookout, the beach, or a friend’s apartment. Cove moves the brand into a different part of the audio world: the always-on, whole-home system meant to live in several rooms at once.

The central promise is familiar but useful. Put a Cove speaker in the kitchen, another in the bedroom, and perhaps a larger one in the living room, then play the same music everywhere or let each room do its own thing. JBL says the speakers can work independently, as stereo pairs, or as part of a larger Wi-Fi group managed through the JBL One app.

The three models are clearly aimed at different spaces and budgets. The $229.95 JBL Cove M1 is the entry-level option, built as a compact home Wi-Fi speaker with two 30mm drivers, a 20mm silk-dome tweeter, and a 4-inch woofer. It does not support Dolby Atmos, but it carries the core multi-room features and automatic room calibration found across the range.

Then there is the JBL Cove P1, which may be the most flexible of the group. Priced at $399.95, it is a portable, battery-powered Wi-Fi speaker that JBL rates for up to 14 hours of use. It also has an IP56 rating for protection against dust and strong water spray, making it a more natural fit for patios, kitchens, or a day spent moving between rooms. Unlike the M1, the P1 supports Dolby Atmos and includes an upward-firing driver intended to add more height and spaciousness to compatible music and entertainment.

At the top of the range is the $449.95 JBL Cove X1. JBL positions it as the flagship, with four silk-dome tweeters – including an upward-firing unit – and two 4-inch woofers. It also supports Dolby Atmos, and on paper it looks like the model for a main living room or another space where a single compact speaker may not feel substantial enough.

What makes Cove more interesting than a straightforward speaker refresh is JBL’s effort to make the system less dependent on a phone. The speakers include a physical “Moment” button, which can be used for functions such as Spotify Tap and the company’s Music Follows Me feature. In theory, that means a listener can hold the button to move ongoing playback from one room to another without digging through an app or reconfiguring speaker groups.

That last bit matters because multi-room audio has often been easy to demonstrate but a little clumsy to live with. The ideal experience is simple: music is playing in the kitchen, you walk to the bedroom, and the sound follows you. JBL says Cove is designed so people can start playback in one room or create a whole-home group without manually ungrouping and regrouping speakers each time they switch locations.

The company is also leaning heavily on its sound-processing tools. Every Cove model has automatic self-tuning, Constant Sound Field technology, and AI Sound Boost. JBL says these systems adapt performance based on a speaker’s placement, maintain more even sound throughout a room, and reduce distortion when the volume climbs. As with most audio processing claims, the real test will be how naturally the system handles awkward real-world placements: on a bookshelf, against a wall, on a kitchen counter, or tucked into the corner of a busy room.

Cove supports the connectivity options buyers now expect from premium Wi-Fi speakers, including AirPlay 2, Google Cast, Bluetooth, Spotify Connect, Tidal Connect, Qobuz Connect, Roon Ready, and high-resolution audio streaming. Alexa is built in for voice control and smart-home commands, while U.S. Prime members and Alexa+ subscribers will also be able to access Alexa+.

JBL is not treating Cove strictly as a music product, either. The M1 and P1 can be used as rear channels with compatible JBL Bar 300, 500, 700, 1000, and 1300X MK2 soundbars, giving owners a path to expand a soundbar setup into a more immersive Dolby Atmos system. The X1 works with those soundbars for multi-room music, but not as a rear surround speaker.

That distinction gives the three-speaker launch a sensible structure. The M1 is the affordable starting point for someone who wants better everyday audio in one room. The P1 is the model for buyers who want that Wi-Fi flexibility without giving up portability. And the X1 is the more serious living-room speaker, designed to deliver fuller sound and a more immersive Atmos effect without requiring a traditional stereo system.

JBL Cove arrives in black and white on September 13, with pricing starting at $229.95. It is a notable shift for JBL: less about the single speaker you bring with you, and more about building an audio system that stays with you throughout the house.
