JBL is giving its most visually distinctive portable speaker another upgrade. The new JBL Pulse 6 brings a larger 360-degree light show, an illuminated carry handle, AI-assisted audio processing, and a handful of unexpected features designed to make it useful even when the music is off.

For years, the Pulse line has occupied a slightly unusual corner of JBL’s Bluetooth speaker portfolio. It has never been solely about squeezing the biggest possible bass from a portable cylinder. Instead, it treats the speaker as part of the atmosphere: something that sits on a patio table, on a kitchen counter, or in the middle of a small get-together and adds color as well as sound.

That approach remains central with the Pulse 6. JBL says the speaker’s customizable 360-degree lighting system has been redesigned with new choreographed effects, alongside gentler ambient modes for less energetic moments. The company is also adding an illuminated handle, which seems like a small visual flourish but makes sense for a speaker intended to be moved from room to room or carried outdoors after dark.

The timing is notable. Portable Bluetooth speakers have become increasingly capable at the practical stuff: better battery life, tougher water resistance, USB-C charging, and multi-speaker pairing are now fairly standard expectations. JBL’s answer is to keep pushing the emotional side of the category. The Pulse 6 is meant to be the speaker people notice, not merely the one that happens to be playing in the background.

At its core, JBL is promising stronger audio than before, backed by an updated acoustic design and its AI Sound Boost technology. According to the company, the feature analyzes music in real time to help maximize output while reducing distortion. That is a familiar claim in portable audio, where small enclosures have to carefully manage volume, bass, and speaker movement. In theory, the benefit is clearer, fuller playback when the volume rises – exactly the situation where a compact party speaker can start to sound strained.

The light show remains the bigger story. JBL says the Pulse 6 has 16 lighting themes, split between 10 ambient options and six party-focused effects. Ambient selections include names such as Aurora, Campfire, Firefly, Sea, and Storm, while the more lively presets include Neon, Bounce, Loop, and Switch. Users will be able to adjust those effects through the JBL One app, which also offers EQ controls and additional mood-setting sounds.

There are two features here that give the speaker a little more personality than a typical Bluetooth model. Sunset Mode can gradually dim the lights over a chosen countdown, turning the Pulse 6 into a more relaxed evening companion rather than a flashing party accessory. Then there is the new Bedside Lamp mode: double-tap the speaker and it switches on a warm light. It is a simple idea, but one that could make the Pulse 6 feel less like a device that spends its downtime in a drawer.

JBL is also continuing to build around Auracast, Bluetooth’s broadcast-style audio capability. Pulse 6 owners will be able to connect the speaker with other compatible JBL models for a larger shared sound setup, including stereo pairing. JBL says users can also synchronize audio and lighting with other Pulse 6 speakers, compatible PartyBox models, and JBL PartyLight products.

That interconnected lighting angle is clearly becoming a wider strategy for JBL. Carsten Olesen, president of consumer audio at HARMAN, said the company has used 360-degree customizable lighting in the Pulse family since the first model launched in 2013, and is now working to create a more unified relationship between light and sound across its speaker range.

On the practical side, the Pulse 6 is rated IP68 for water and dust resistance, so it should be better equipped for poolside use, beach trips, and the occasional spill than a speaker designed strictly for indoor listening. JBL rates battery life at up to 12 hours, and the speaker supports lossless audio playback through USB-C. It also uses Bluetooth 6.0 and can work with JBL’s EasySing Mic Mini for karaoke setups.

JBL says the speaker includes recycled materials as well, including a handle made with 93% recycled metal. As always, that does not make the product impact-free, but it is a worthwhile improvement in a category where hardware is frequently replaced and built from a mix of plastics, metals, batteries, and electronics.

The JBL Pulse 6 is priced at $329.95 in the United States and is scheduled to begin shipping on September 6. That places it firmly in premium portable-speaker territory, especially for buyers who only care about audio performance per dollar. But the Pulse has always been for a different kind of shopper – someone who wants their speaker to contribute to the setting, whether that means a full-color party centerpiece or a soft bedside glow after the playlist ends.
