If your holiday shopping list is starting to look less like a list and more like a novel, you’re not alone. We’re all bracing for the annual marathon of gift-buying, grocery-stocking, and budget-juggling. In the midst of this, Walmart is dangling a particularly shiny lure: a full year of its Walmart Plus membership for $49.

That’s 50% off the usual $98 price tag, but the deal is for new subscribers only and it vanishes after December 2nd.

On the surface, it’s a screaming deal. But in a world where every company wants a slice of your monthly subscription budget, the real question is: what do you actually get for that $49, and will you even use it?

Let’s break it down.

The most immediate, in-your-face reason to sign up right now is all about Black Friday.

Walmart, like most big retailers, has turned Black Friday from a single day of chaos into a multi-week “event.” The problem is, the hottest doorbusters (or, let’s be real, “browser-busters”) sell out in minutes.

Walmart Plus membership acts as a 5-hour early access pass to these online deals. You get to shop before the general public, which can be the difference between snagging that discounted big-screen TV and seeing an “out of stock” message.

This year’s schedule is a bit of a marathon. Here’s the map:

  • Event 1: Walmart Plus members get online access on Thursday, November 13th at 7:00 pm ET.
    • Everyone else gets access from November 14th through November 16th, both online and in-store.
  • Event 2 (the main event): Walmart Plus members get online access on Monday, November 24th at 7:00 pm ET.
    • Everyone else gets online-only access from November 25th through November 27th.
    • The event opens for everyone (online and in-store) from November 28th through November 30th.
  • Cyber Monday: Walmart Plus members get online access on Sunday, November 30th at 7:00 PM ET.
    • Everyone else gets access on Monday, December 1st.

If you’re a serious Black Friday shopper, that 5-hour head start on three separate occasions might be worth the $49 entry fee all by itself.

Okay, so early access is great. But what about the rest of the year? This is where the membership’s true value is won or lost.

Walmart Plus is essentially Walmart’s answer to Amazon Prime, but with a heavy focus on groceries and in-store perks rather than just fast shipping.

Here’s the full list of benefits:

  1. Free delivery from your store: This is the cornerstone. You can get groceries, gadgets, and just about anything else in your local store delivered to your door, often on the same day. You just have to hit a $35 minimum, which isn’t hard to do on a weekly grocery run.
  2. Free shipping (no minimum): For items on Walmart.com (not from your local store), this benefit removes the $35 shipping minimum. It’s great for when you just need to order one or two things.
  3. A free streaming service: This is a surprisingly valuable perk. You get to choose between a Paramount+ Essential plan (with ads) or a Peacock Premium plan (with ads). You can’t have both at the same time, but you can switch between them every 90 days. A Peacock Premium plan alone costs about $60 a year, so this single benefit technically pays for the $49 promotional membership.
  4. Member savings on fuel: This one’s a sleeper hit. You get 10 cents off every gallon of gas at thousands of Exxon and Mobil stations nationwide. If you fill up a 15-gallon tank just three times a month, that’s $4.50 in savings right there.
  5. Scan & Go: If you still shop in-store, this is a major time-saver. You use the Walmart app to scan your items as you put them in the cart. When you’re done, you just walk up to a self-checkout, scan a single QR code on the screen, and pay. No unloading your cart, no re-scanning every item.
  6. Returns from home: You can schedule a pickup for a return. Just leave the item on your doorstep, and a Walmart driver will swing by to grab it—no box or label-printing required.

You also get access to a rotating list of limited-time offers, like the five free months of Apple Music they’re currently promoting.

So, who is this actually for?

Let’s be honest. If you live in a city and almost exclusively shop at Whole Foods and Amazon, this isn’t for you.

But if you’re one of these people, this $49 deal is a no-brainer:

  • The Walmart grocery shopper: If you already get (or want to get) weekly groceries delivered from Walmart, this is a must-have. The delivery fees you’ll save will pay for the membership in just a few orders.
  • The commuter: If you live near an Exxon or Mobil station, the 10-cent-per-gallon discount can add up to serious savings over a year.
  • The cord-cutter: If you’ve been meaning to sign up for Paramount+ (for Star Trek or NFL games) or Peacock (for The Office or Premier League soccer), this is the cheapest way to do it. You get the streaming service and all the other perks for less than the cost of the streaming plan itself.
  • The in-store hater-of-lines: The Scan & Go feature feels like a superpower during a busy Saturday shopping trip.

The one catch you can’t forget

There is, of course, one string attached. The deal you’re signing up for is an annual membership that will automatically renew at the full $98 price this time next year.

So, here’s your pro tip: Grab this deal, then immediately go into your calendar and set a reminder for November 2026. Title it “Do I still want Walmart Plus?”

That way, you can enjoy all the holiday savings and a year’s worth of perks, and then make a clear-headed decision about whether the full price is worth it for you. But for $49? It’s one of the best holiday deals already out there.
