Players of the popular 2018 game Assassin’s Creed Odyssey found themselves transported from the grandeur of ancient Greece to the commercialism of the modern world this week when unexpected pop-up advertisements suddenly appeared on their screens.
According to player reports, the full-screen ads were appearing on both PlayStation and Xbox versions of Odyssey when transitioning to the in-game map. Many were angered at the intrusion into their gameplay, especially for a title that already launched years ago at a $60 price point.
In response to the player complaints circulating online, Ubisoft has attributed the frustrating pop-ups to a “technical error.” A company spokesperson claimed they were only meant to display in the main menus of games, promoting the recently announced Assassin’s Creed Mirage. Due to a glitch, they somehow ended up plastered across players’ screens mid-Odyssey.
Ubisoft says the issue has now been resolved, but players are leery of seeing similar intrusions in the future. The gaming community views this as a concerning precedent, wary of ads becoming commonplace interruptions to single-player experiences.
While the vibrant beauty of ancient Greece has returned for now in Odyssey, some gamers can’t quite banish the ominous vision of a future where immersive worlds come replete with untimely real-world promotions. Here’s hoping game makers don’t let commercial ambitions undermine their players’ epic adventures.
