There is a familiar little ritual built into driving: patting your pockets for the car key, fishing it out at the curb, pressing unlock, and then putting it somewhere you hope you will remember later. Samsung and Volkswagen want to make that routine feel increasingly dated.
Samsung Wallet is now adding Digital Key support for select Volkswagen ID. electric vehicles in Europe, allowing owners with compatible Galaxy phones to unlock, lock and start their cars without carrying a conventional key fob. The feature began rolling out on August 18 and covers Volkswagen’s growing ID. lineup, including the ID.3neo, ID.4, ID.5, ID.7 and ID.Buzz, alongside the forthcoming ID.Polo and ID.Cross.
The headline feature is hands-free access. With a compatible Galaxy device and a suitably equipped Volkswagen, owners can approach the vehicle with their phone still in a pocket or bag and use ultra-wideband, or UWB, technology to open it. For moments when proximity is not the point, near-field communication, or NFC, provides a more familiar tap-to-unlock and start experience.
It is a small convenience on paper, but it speaks to a bigger shift in how cars are being folded into the phone-centered lives most people already lead. A smartphone has become a wallet, boarding pass holder, identity document and smart-home remote. Adding a vehicle key is the logical next move – particularly for EV buyers, who are already accustomed to vehicles that feel more like connected devices than traditional machines.
Samsung Wallet is positioning the Volkswagen integration as part of that wider all-in-one pitch. Rather than asking drivers to manage a separate car-brand app and a physical fob, the company wants the key to live alongside payment cards, IDs, tickets and passes in the Wallet app.
That may sound like a simple matter of tidying up a digital drawer, but the practical difference can be meaningful. People frequently share cars with partners, relatives or friends; a digital key can be sent through Samsung Wallet, with the owner able to define permissions and revoke access when it is no longer needed. That is far more flexible than handing over a physical key and hoping it eventually makes its way back.
The system also supports remote trunk access, which should be useful in the kinds of ordinary, unglamorous moments that tend to reveal whether connected-car features are genuinely helpful: returning to the vehicle carrying grocery bags, meeting someone at an airport, or lending a car to a visitor for the afternoon.
Convenience needs trust
Digital keys are appealing precisely because they replace something people are used to treating as important. That makes security less of a footnote and more of the entire proposition.
Samsung says the Volkswagen keys are stored on the device and protected by Samsung Knox, its security platform. The company also says its Digital Key implementation meets EAL6+ certification standards, a high assurance level designed to address sophisticated attacks, while biometric or PIN verification helps protect access to the key on the phone itself.
UWB is particularly important here. Unlike a basic short-range wireless signal, it can help the phone and vehicle determine proximity more precisely. That matters because modern keyless-entry systems have faced relay-attack concerns, in which criminals can use equipment to extend the apparent range of a key. Samsung says its UWB implementation follows Car Connectivity Consortium standards and is designed to reduce the risk of unintended entry attempts.
There is also a safety net for the inevitable lost-phone scenario. If a Galaxy phone containing the vehicle key is misplaced or stolen, Samsung says the owner can remotely manage or remove the Digital Key through Samsung Find.
None of this eliminates the need for drivers to think carefully about account security, screen locks and who receives access to their car. But it does show how digital-key systems are maturing beyond the early novelty of using a phone as a substitute for a fob. The aim is not merely to unlock a door with a different gadget. It is to make access easier to manage, easier to share and easier to shut down if something goes wrong.
The compatibility catch
As with many connected-car upgrades, the fine print matters. This is not a retrofit feature for every Volkswagen EV already on the road.
Samsung says support is limited to eligible Volkswagen ID. vehicles produced on or after April 27, 2026, fitted with the “Preparation for Digital Key” option package and running ID. software 6.0.1 or newer. Earlier cars are excluded because of hardware requirements.
The rollout is also Europe-only for now, covering a long list of markets that includes major countries such as Germany, France, the UK, Italy, Spain, Sweden and Norway. That means Volkswagen ID. owners in the United States should not interpret the announcement as an immediate indication that their vehicle will gain Samsung Wallet access. Availability depends on regional vehicle specifications, software support and local product plans.
Phone compatibility is similarly broad but not universal. Samsung lists support across many Galaxy S, Galaxy Z, Galaxy Note, Galaxy A and XCover devices, while UWB-based hands-free entry is reserved for specific higher-end models with the necessary hardware. NFC-based use is available on a wider set of compatible phones.
In other words, the experience may range from tap-to-unlock to true walk-up, hands-free access depending on the particular Galaxy phone in an owner’s pocket.
Another step in the wallet race
Volkswagen is not Samsung Wallet’s first automotive partner. Samsung has steadily expanded its Digital Key roster through integrations with brands including Mercedes-Benz, Porsche and Toyota, suggesting that digital vehicle credentials are becoming a core battleground for phone ecosystems rather than a niche feature.
The partnership also fits Volkswagen’s broader effort to make its ID. family feel more seamless and software-led. Volkswagen says it delivered around 382,000 all-electric vehicles globally in 2025, so even a feature initially restricted to newer European vehicles has the potential to reach a meaningful segment of EV drivers as compatible models enter the market.
For Volkswagen, the appeal is obvious: a digital key makes the car feel more modern without requiring the owner to learn a whole new interface. For Samsung, it strengthens Wallet’s argument that the Galaxy phone should sit at the center of a user’s daily routine.
The physical key is unlikely to disappear overnight. Cars are long-lived products, buyers vary widely in their comfort with app-based access, and a conventional backup remains reassuring when a phone battery runs low or a device is damaged. But partnerships like this one make the direction of travel hard to miss.
The key fob is being demoted from essential object to fallback plan. And for owners of the latest compatible Volkswagen ID. EVs, the next time they walk to their car with coffee in one hand and a phone in the other, they may not need to reach for a key at all.
