Remember when PlayStation Plus first debuted? It was a game-changer, offering online multiplayer and cloud saves for your PlayStation 3 and Vita games. Back then, cloud saves were a luxury, offering peace of mind in case your console suffered a dreaded “Yellow Light of Death.” Fast forward to the PlayStation 4 and 5, and cloud saves are still a crucial feature, but there’s a hidden limitation that might catch you off guard: the 1000 save limit.

Cloud saves on PlayStation Plus have come a long way. Initially introduced as a premium feature, they’ve become an essential part of the service. The ability to seamlessly transfer your game progress between consoles, or even recover lost data, has been invaluable to countless players.

While PlayStation Plus offers a generous 100GB of cloud storage for both PS4 and PS5 games, there’s a lesser-known restriction: you can only store a maximum of 1000 individual save files. This might seem like plenty at first glance, but it can quickly become a problem, especially for those who play a variety of games or games that create multiple save files.

Why does this limit exist?

The 1000 save limit is likely a technical constraint imposed by the cloud storage infrastructure. While it’s unclear why Sony hasn’t increased this limit over the years, it’s a significant issue for many players.

The 1000 save limit can have a direct impact on your gaming experience. If you’re a prolific gamer who enjoys trying out different titles, you may find yourself running out of cloud storage space more frequently than you’d like. Additionally, games that create multiple save files, such as RPGs or open-world adventures, can consume your cloud storage quota much faster.

A few tips to manage the save limit

To avoid hitting the 1000 save limit, you’ll need to be mindful of your cloud storage usage. Here are some tips to help you manage your saves:

  1. Delete old saves: Regularly delete saves for games you’ve completed or no longer play.
  2. Limit auto-saves: Some games create multiple auto-saves. If possible, adjust the auto-save settings to reduce the number of saves generated.
  3. Use external storage: Consider using an external hard drive to store local copies of your saved files, freeing up space in your cloud storage.
  4. Be mindful of game-specific save mechanics: Some games, like those with extensive modding support, may create additional save files. Be aware of how these games handle saves and plan accordingly.

A call for Sony to address the limit

As the PlayStation Plus library continues to expand, the 1000 save limit is becoming an increasingly pressing issue. While Sony has yet to address this limitation publicly, it’s possible that they may consider increasing the limit or implementing alternative solutions in the future.

In the meantime, it’s important for PlayStation Plus subscribers to be aware of the 1000 save limit and take steps to manage their cloud storage effectively.
