Razer, a pioneering gaming hardware manufacturer, has made two major announcements that are causing a stir in the gaming industry. These announcements unveil two new gaming laptops, the Blade 16 and Blade 18, that come with significant improvements in display technology, processing power, and a subtle infusion of artificial intelligence. The company has revealed these enhancements in a series of staggered reveals, promising to redefine the gaming laptop experience.

Blade 16 OLED gets CPU boost

The headline-grabbing feature for the Blade 16 is undeniably its breathtaking 2560 x 1600 240Hz OLED panel, promising a visual feast for gaming enthusiasts. Razer’s Will Powers revealed that the Blade 16 will also offer a dual-mode mini-LED display, first seen in 2023, with a flexible choice between 4K/120Hz or 1600p/240Hz. A notable addition is the introduction of local dimming, now toggleable through software.

Under the hood, the Blade 16 undergoes a CPU bump, transitioning from the 13th Gen Intel Core i9-13950HX to the 14th Gen (Raptor Lake) Core i9-14900HX. While specifics on the new CPU are yet to be officially released, leaked benchmarks suggest performance parity with its predecessor. The GPU options remain robust, supporting up to an RTX 4090 with a formidable 175W total power draw. The Blade 16 is currently available for preorder, with prices starting at $2,999.99.

Blade 14 gets Ryzen-powered AI enhancements

In the Blade 14 camp, Razer opts for subtlety, updating the CPU from the AMD Ryzen 9 7940HS to the AMD Ryzen 9 8945HS. The key differentiator here is the improved onboard AI processing, promising a boost in AI workloads. The 2560 x 1660 240Hz panel is now Calman Verified, ensuring factory calibration for enhanced display accuracy.

Staying true to its predecessor’s configuration, the Blade 14 maintains its capacity for up to an RTX 4070 GPU, boasting up to 140W total power draw. Preorders for the Blade 14 kick off on January 23rd, 2024, with hopeful expectations for a more reasonable price point compared to its predecessor.

Blade 18: Thunderbolt 5 teaser

Razer has released a teaser for the upcoming Blade 18 laptop, confirming the inclusion of a 4K 165Hz display and Thunderbolt 5 support. Thunderbolt 5 will offer impressive features such as 240W charging, 120Gbps data transfer, and a remarkable 540Hz video refresh rate. More information about this powerful machine is expected to be revealed at a later date.

New USB-C dock

Razer complements its laptop lineup with an 11-port USB-C dock encased in sleek aluminum. This versatile dock features Gigabit ethernet, HDMI 2.0, UHS-1 SD and microSD slots, a 3.5mm audio jack supporting 7.1 surround sound, four USB-A ports, and two USB-C ports. Notably, two USB-A ports and the USB-C ports boast 10Gbps transfer rates, while the remaining USB-A ports operate at 2.0 (480Mbps). With support for 85W power passthrough and 4K/60Hz display output via HDMI, the USB-C dock is now available for purchase at $119.99.
