During the 25th Newport Beach Film Festival on October 20, 2024, Nicolas Cage delivered a powerful message to young actors about the growing impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on the film industry. As Cage accepted his Icon Award, he used the opportunity to caution up-and-coming talent about the risks of allowing AI to manipulate their performances. He warned that AI, particularly Employment-Based Digital Replica (EBDR) technology, could allow studios to alter actors’ facial expressions, voices, and even body language, ultimately taking away the creative essence of their work.
Cage’s concerns stem from the increasing use of AI in Hollywood, following the resolution of the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strikes, which permitted certain forms of AI in the industry. While EBDR ensures that actors are compensated for AI-related work, it still raises questions about creative control, especially for younger actors without the leverage to negotiate their terms.
The actor emphasized the importance of protecting the human element of acting—what he refers to as the “instrument”—from being overtaken by technology. Cage has been vocal in the past about his fear that AI could replace the emotional depth and authenticity that actors bring to their roles, questioning the future of artistry in film if AI becomes more prevalent.
This event highlights ongoing debates in the industry about the balance between technological advancements and preserving the integrity of performance art, with many, like Cage, advocating for caution as AI continues to evolve in Hollywood.
