Amazon‘s upgraded AI assistant, Alexa+, has officially touched down in Australia, marking a significant milestone for both the tech giant and Aussie smart-home fans. Starting August 6, 2026, the next-generation voice assistant is rolling out through an Early Access program, bringing with it a suite of generative AI features that promise to make interactions feel less like talking to a robot and more like chatting with a helpful friend.

For Prime members, the upgrade is free, while non-Prime users can subscribe for AU$29.99 per month. This isn’t just a cosmetic refresh; Alexa+ represents a fundamental shift in how the assistant understands and acts on requests, leveraging large language models to handle complex, multi-step tasks that older voice assistants would have stumbled over.

A smarter, more conversational Alexa

The headline feature of Alexa+ is its generative AI backbone, which allows it to maintain context during conversations, understand nuanced requests, and even generate content on the fly. Unlike previous versions that relied on rigid command structures, Alexa+ can engage in natural dialogue, remember preferences, and offer personalized recommendations based on past interactions.

This means you can ask it to “plan a dinner party for six with vegetarian options” and it will not only suggest recipes but also coordinate grocery orders from Amazon Fresh or Whole Foods, book a table via OpenTable if you prefer dining out, and even remind you when tickets go on sale for a concert you’ve been eyeing on Ticketmaster.

Agentic AI: When Alexa starts doing the legwork

One of the most significant upgrades is what Amazon calls “agentic capabilities” – essentially, Alexa+ can now navigate the internet and complete tasks on your behalf without needing constant hand-holding. This is a step beyond simple voice commands; it’s about delegating entire workflows to your assistant.

For example, if you mention you need a plumber, Alexa+ can search for local services, check reviews, compare pricing, and even book an appointment through partner platforms like Thumbtack or Vagaro. It’s the kind of functionality that blurs the line between a voice assistant and a personal concierge.

Smart home integration gets an AI boost

Australia’s smart home market has been growing steadily, and Alexa+ is positioned to capitalize on this trend with enhanced control over connected devices. The assistant can now manage complex routines and respond to more natural language commands, making it easier to control everything from lighting and thermostats to security cameras and robot vacuums.

Ring Home Premium subscribers get an additional perk: AI-powered video search that lets you ask Alexa+ to show footage of specific events, like “when did the dog last go outside?” or “show me all deliveries from today.”

The competitive landscape: Alexa+ vs. the rest

The arrival of Alexa+ in Australia puts it in direct competition with Google‘s Gemini-powered Assistant and Apple‘s Siri, both of which have been integrating generative AI features into their platforms. While Google Assistant has traditionally held an edge in search capabilities and Android integration, Alexa+ is betting big on its ecommerce ecosystem and smart home compatibility to win over users.

For Australian consumers, the choice often comes down to which ecosystem they’re already invested in. If you’re deep into Amazon’s services – from Prime Video to Kindle to AWS – Alexa+ offers seamless integration that competitors can’t match.

Pricing and availability

The AU$29.99 monthly price tag for non-Prime members positions Alexa+ as a premium service, but it’s competitive with similar AI assistant offerings globally. Prime members, however, get access at no additional cost, which could be a significant incentive for Australians considering a Prime subscription.

The Early Access rollout means the service is being introduced gradually, with Amazon likely monitoring performance and user feedback before a full-scale launch. This phased approach has been standard for Amazon’s international expansions, allowing the company to iron out any region-specific issues before going all-in.

What’s next for Alexa+ in Australia

Amazon has indicated that Alexa+ will continue to expand its capabilities and local partnerships in Australia. The company has already announced features like on-demand AI-generated podcast episodes, which could be particularly appealing to Australia’s strong podcasting community.

With the foundation now in place, the focus will shift to deepening local integrations – think more Australian restaurant booking services, local delivery partners, and content providers that make the assistant feel genuinely attuned to Aussie lifestyles.
