Play NBA 2K26 free on Switch if you’re a Switch Online member

If you have been waiting to see if this year’s NBA 2K is worth it, you can try the full game on Switch and Switch 2 at no cost this week.

If you have been curious about this year’s NBA 2K without wanting to immediately commit to another full-price sports game, Nintendo is offering a useful way in. Nintendo Switch Online members can download and play the full version of NBA 2K26 on both Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 at no additional charge through August 13 at 11:59 pm PT.

The limited-time Game Trial began August 7 at 10 am PT, giving subscribers nearly a week to see how the latest annual basketball release feels on Nintendo’s hardware. This is not a stripped-back demo with a couple of exhibition teams or a carefully fenced-off slice of a season mode. Nintendo says the offer covers the full game, including solo play, local multiplayer, online modes, player creation, team management, and modes built around NBA and WNBA stars.

That matters because NBA 2K games are usually difficult to judge in a short demo. The series has become less about simply picking a team and playing a five-minute match, and more about the sprawling ecosystem around it: building a custom player, chasing progression, collecting cards, experimenting with rosters, and deciding whether the game’s online experience fits into your routine. A few nights with the complete package is a much better test than a trailer or a quick match at a friend’s house.

For Switch owners in particular, the trial is also a chance to answer a more practical question: which version makes sense? Nintendo is running the offer across both the original Switch and Switch 2, while the retail pricing differs. The Switch 2 edition is listed at $69.99, while the Nintendo Switch version is listed at $59.99. That makes the free period a sensible opportunity to compare how the game feels on the console you already own before spending up to $70.

The most important detail is that this is a Nintendo Switch Online benefit, not a universally free download. You will need an active Nintendo Switch Online membership and a Nintendo Account to participate, especially for online features. Nintendo also points users without a membership toward its seven-day free trial, though the usual caveats apply: the trial converts into a one-month auto-renewing membership unless it is canceled, and it is not available to accounts that already have an active individual or family membership.

Still, for existing subscribers, this is the kind of perk that can feel more substantial than the usual batch of retro additions or cosmetic bonuses. Sports games are annual purchases, and the improvements from one season to the next can be difficult to grasp from screenshots. The trial lets players spend meaningful time on the court, sample the game’s different modes, and make a more informed call on whether this year’s release is worth keeping around after the clock runs out.

Nintendo says any save data created during the Game Trial will carry over if players buy NBA 2K26 during or after the promotion. That is especially helpful for anyone who dives into a player career or begins assembling a collection, since the time spent during the trial does not have to be treated as disposable. You can start playing now, then pick up where you left off if the game clicks.

There is also a small extra incentive for Nintendo Switch Online members who try the game: Nintendo is offering 100 My Nintendo Platinum Points through a related mission. Those points are not a major reason to download a basketball game on their own, but they are a nice bonus for subscribers already planning to give the trial a look.

The timing is good for basketball fans looking for something to fill the gap between real-world NBA storylines and the start of another season. It is also a low-risk way for more casual players to test whether the deeper parts of NBA 2K26 appeal to them. Maybe all you want is a few couch matches with friends. Maybe you want to create a player and work through the ranks. Or maybe you just want to see whether the latest edition feels like an upgrade over the version already sitting in your library.

Either way, the window is short. NBA 2K26 is available to try until August 13 at 11:59 pm PT on Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2, provided you have Nintendo Switch Online.
