Netflix, known for its binge-worthy series and movies, might be gearing up for a touchdown in the world of live sports programming. Reports suggest that the streaming giant is in talks with the NFL to potentially air Christmas Day football games on its platform this December.

According to a scoop from Puck News via CBS Sports, negotiations between Netflix and the NFL are in full swing, though nothing is set in stone just yet. As is typical with high-stakes deals, there’s always a chance that talks could hit a snag.

Fueling speculation further, former NFL MVP and media personality Boomer Esiason hinted at the possibility on his radio show, suggesting that the NFL and Netflix might be cozying up for a festive football extravaganza.

Traditionally, Christmas Day football has been a staple on networks like CBS, Fox, and ABC. However, the NFL announced earlier this year that it would entertain bids for the 2024 games, opening the door for unconventional platforms like Netflix to enter the fray.

Netflix isn’t a stranger to sports content. The streaming service already boasts shows like “Quarterback” from Peyton Manning’s production company, with more in the pipeline. If Netflix clinches the rights to air NFL games, it would join a growing list of subscription services offering football coverage, alongside the likes of Peacock, ESPN+, and Prime Video.

With the NFL’s 2024 schedule set to be unveiled on May 15, all eyes are on which networks or platforms will secure the coveted Christmas Day slots. This announcement was initially expected on May 9 but has been pushed back.

Netflix’s foray into live sports isn’t limited to football. They’ve dabbled in golf, tennis, and boxing, with plans to air WWE Raw in 2025. As they continue to invest in premium sports content, subscribers may find themselves footing the bill through potential subscription price hikes down the line.
