As soon as the last jack-o-lanterns get dumped in the trash and retailers start stringing festive lights, the sounds of the holiday season begin permeating shops, airwaves, and playlists. Love it or hate it, Christmas music is an inescapable part of the last six or so weeks of the year. A new study from entertainment site Nicki Swift analyzing Spotify and Billboard data has crowned a queen of Christmas based on the most-streamed holiday hits.
Sitting atop the Christmas music throne with a staggering 1.5 billion streams is none other than Mariah Carey with her 1994 earworm, “All I Want For Christmas is You.” With its jaunty melody and Carey’s virtuosic vocals, the track has become a staple of holiday playlists and is inescapable from Thanksgiving onward. Carey crafted it to sound timeless, not anchored to any one era.
“My goal was to do something timeless, so it didn’t feel like the ‘90s, which is when I wrote it,” Carey told Good Morning America. Mission accomplished. Nearly thirty years later, all anyone wants for Christmas is to hear Carey belt out the iconic tune. She lives up to her recently bestowed title as “Queen of Christmas” anytime her smash single gets aired.
Trailing behind at #2 on the most-streamed list is Wham!’s “Last Christmas” featuring George Michael’s melancholy vocals and the 1980s New Wave pop sensibilities. The tune conjures up images of rejected lovers and holiday heartbreak. Its 969 million streams prove plenty of people want to wallow along to the song’s romantic nostalgia near the fireplace with some spiked eggnog. Coming in at a very jolly third place is Brenda Lee’s 1958 classic “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree” with 904 million streams. Its bubbly bassline and Lee’s coy vocals breathe festive playfulness into any holiday gathering.
Other classics making the top fifteen round out familiar holiday feels: Bing Crosby brings riches-to-rags sentimentality with 1942’s “White Christmas” which boasted nearly half a billion streams. Justin Bieber channels seasonal romance with the flirty yet wholesome 2011 track “Mistletoe,” earning over 850 million streams. Even modern classics like Ariana Grande’s “Santa Tell Me” conjure up nostalgia for childhood holidays.
No matter your musical tastes or traditions, the songs streaming the most this Christmas season prove holiday music continues to hold a special place in our seasonal celebrations and pop culture. With Mariah Carey leading the charge as the newly crowned Yuletide Queen, all anyone wants is for her anthemic carol to soundtrack the festivities as we deck the halls and don our gay apparel once more. The billion-plus fans streaming her smash hit certainly agree.
