MacPaw, the Kyiv-based software company best known for its macOS and iOS utilities, has just rolled out a new feature in its VPN service ClearVPN that speaks directly to the concerns of modern families: Kid Safe Mode. The timing is deliberate—announced on Safer Internet Day, a global initiative focused on responsible digital use—this update reflects the growing demand for tools that help parents protect children without resorting to heavy-handed surveillance.

Kid Safe Mode is designed to be simple. With a single toggle, the VPN activates filters powered by NextDNS that block access to adult content, gambling sites, and other harmful corners of the web. Unlike traditional parental control software, it doesn’t monitor or log browsing history. MacPaw’s product manager, Tetiana Shokina, emphasized that the goal isn’t to police kids’ online behavior but to create a safe environment where they can explore freely. That distinction matters: in an era when 96% of U.S. teens are online daily and nearly all have smartphones, the balance between safety and autonomy is delicate.

The feature works across devices—smartphones, desktops, tablets—and a single ClearVPN subscription covers up to six, making it practical for households where children bounce between screens. It complements ClearVPN’s existing protections like DNS Adblock and Online Threat Shield, which already defend against malicious apps, phishing, and cryptojacking. Importantly, ClearVPN maintains a strict no-logs policy, recording only the number of blocked sites rather than user activity.

Alongside Kid Safe Mode, MacPaw has also integrated the WireGuard protocol into ClearVPN. WireGuard has been gaining traction in the VPN industry for its lightweight design and speed. Unlike older protocols, it uses far less code, which reduces potential vulnerabilities and makes connections faster and more secure. For users, this means VPN sessions that establish almost instantly, consume less battery, and deliver more stable performance. It’s a technical upgrade that pairs well with the family-focused Kid Safe Mode, ensuring that safety doesn’t come at the expense of usability.

The broader context here is that parents are increasingly looking to tech companies to shoulder some responsibility. Surveys show that two-thirds of parents believe firms should do more to set boundaries for kids online. MacPaw’s move is part of a wider industry trend: VPNs are no longer just about privacy for adults—they’re becoming tools for digital well-being across age groups.

ClearVPN’s update is a reminder that internet safety isn’t just about shielding users from hackers or surveillance. It’s also about shaping online spaces where children can learn, play, and grow without stumbling into harmful content. By combining Kid Safe Mode with WireGuard’s performance boost, MacPaw is positioning ClearVPN as a VPN that doesn’t just protect—it nurtures.
