If you’ve been waiting for Apple’s most powerful MacBook Pro configuration to get a meaningful price cut, this is one worth looking at. Amazon is currently offering the 16-inch MacBook Pro with Apple’s M5 Max chip for $3,799, giving you a $600 saving on this high-end configuration.

The deal applies to the Space Black model with an 18-core CPU, 32-core GPU, 36GB of unified memory, and a 2TB SSD. That’s a considerably more serious configuration than the entry-level MacBook Pro, and it is aimed squarely at people who actually have workloads capable of putting the M5 Max to work.

The M5 Max configuration combines a powerful CPU and GPU with Apple’s unified memory architecture, while the 2TB SSD gives you substantially more local storage for large projects. Apple also equips the M5 Pro and M5 Max MacBook Pro models with Thunderbolt 5, Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, an SDXC card slot, HDMI, MagSafe 3, and a headphone jack. The M5 Max can drive up to four external displays in addition to the built-in display.

At $3,799, you’re still spending serious money on a laptop. But this is the kind of machine where the value comes from the hardware you’re getting rather than simply the size of the discount. If you regularly edit high-resolution video, work with demanding 3D projects, compile large codebases, run local AI workloads, or otherwise need a powerful mobile workstation, the M5 Max and 2TB SSD configuration gives you plenty of headroom.

For more ordinary laptop tasks, though, the M5 Max is massive overkill. A MacBook Pro with the M5 or M5 Pro chip can handle everyday productivity, browsing, coding, photo editing, and plenty of creative work without requiring a four-figure premium for the Max chip. The $600 saving makes this configuration more interesting, but it doesn’t suddenly turn a professional workstation into a mainstream laptop.
