The iconic video game franchise, Yakuza, is making a dramatic leap from the virtual world to the small screen. Streaming giant Prime Video has announced an upcoming live-action series adaptation titled Like a Dragon: Yakuza.
Set to premiere on October 24th, the six-part series promises a deep dive into the complex world of Japanese organized crime. The show will be available in a staggering 30 languages, with both subtitled and dubbed versions, aiming to captivate a global audience.
At the helm of this ambitious project are directors Take Masaharu and Takimoto Kengo, known for their work on 100 Yen Love and Kamen Teacher, respectively. The series stars the versatile Takeuchi Ryoma, who has previously graced screens in multiple Kamen Rider installments, in the lead role of the legendary Yakuza, Kazuma Kiryu.
Like a Dragon: Yakuza is a gritty crime drama that spans two decades, from 1995 to 2005. It delves into the intricate lives of Kiryu and his childhood friends, exploring the far-reaching consequences of their choices. The series aims to capture the essence of the beloved game franchise, showcasing the intense characters and the vibrant, yet dangerous, world of Kamurochō – a fictional district inspired by Tokyo’s infamous Kabukichō.
Producers believe that the series offers a unique opportunity to explore the complexities of modern Japan and the compelling stories of characters like Kazuma Kiryu in a way that previous games could not.
