In a significant breakthrough for the electric vehicle (EV) industry, Chinese startup Greater Bay Technology has announced the development of a groundbreaking EV battery that claims to maintain its range and charge at normal speeds even in cold temperatures. This innovative solution, known as the Phoenix cell, utilizes superconducting materials and advanced thermal management technology to address the persistent challenge of reduced charging efficiency in low temperatures. With its impressive capabilities and potential to revolutionize the EV market, Greater Bay Technology aims to lead the way in the mass adoption of electric vehicles.

Cold weather has long been a hurdle for EV batteries, causing reduced efficiency and extended charging times. Recognizing this issue, Greater Bay Technology’s co-founder and chairman, Huang Xiangdong, revealed that the Phoenix cell can rapidly heat itself from -4°F to 77°F (-20°C to 25°C) in just five minutes. This unique feature allows the battery to charge within six minutes in any weather conditions, eliminating the range anxiety associated with cold temperatures, according to Bloomberg. By overcoming the long-standing problem of cold weather performance, the Phoenix battery positions itself as a game-changer in the EV market.

Huang Xiangdong emphasized that the benefits of the Phoenix battery extend beyond addressing the challenges posed by cold weather. The new technology promises to revolutionize the EV charging experience by drastically reducing charging times, making electric vehicles more convenient and accessible. Additionally, the Phoenix battery boasts an impressive range of 1,000 kilometers (621 miles), offering a competitive edge compared to existing EV batteries in the market. With these advantages, Greater Bay Technology aims to improve not only the charging experience but also overall EV performance.

Greater Bay Technology’s partnership with Aion, one of China’s leading EV brands, marks a significant milestone for the startup. Aion, which operates under the state-owned Guangzhou Automobile Corporation, plans to incorporate the Phoenix cell into its upcoming electric vehicle models. By joining forces with established automakers, Greater Bay Technology aims to drive widespread adoption of its innovative battery technology and accelerate the transition to electric mobility.

Greater Bay Technology envisions a future where electric vehicles are as convenient and easy to maintain as traditional gasoline-powered cars. Huang Xiangdong’s long-term vision aligns with the company’s mission to overcome the barriers that have hindered the mass adoption of electric vehicles. By tackling key pain points such as charging time and range loss in cold weather, the Phoenix battery represents a significant step forward in achieving this goal.

Founded just two years ago, Greater Bay Technology has quickly emerged as a disruptive force in the EV battery industry. With a valuation exceeding $1 billion, the startup has garnered attention and investment from industry leaders and investors alike. The company’s first-generation battery, equipped in Aion’s V Plus electric SUV, showcases its commitment to providing fast-charging solutions for electric vehicles. Greater Bay Technology’s partnership with Aion and ongoing discussions with other prominent automakers demonstrate the industry’s recognition of its groundbreaking technology.
