Remember that Google experiment that let you write colorful notes on search results? Yeah, about that… Google just announced they’re shutting it down.
Launched last November as part of their “Search Labs” playground for new ideas, the feature looked like a digital Post-it note party on your search results. You could add text and images to specific links, kind of like a community bulletin board for search results.
Think of it as a more visual version of those “Community Notes” you see on X (formerly Twitter). Pretty cool idea, right? Well, apparently not cool enough for everyone.
According to Google, the experiment “wasn’t quite ready for prime time.” In a statement, Google’s Ashley Thompson said their “Search Labs” are all about trying out new things, and not everything sticks. They did learn a lot from the Notes experiment though, especially about how people want to connect with each other on search. Thompson hinted that future Google features might incorporate ways to get “real people with real voices” involved in your search journey.
The news isn’t a total shock. The experiment was originally supposed to wrap up in May, but Google extended it for a bit. Now, it’s officially a “thanks, but no thanks” from Google.
