The new Google Home Speaker with Gemini built-in is now available for purchase, marking the beginning of a new era in smart home technology. After six years without a major smart speaker launch, Google has finally dropped its first audio device built from the ground up for Gemini AI—and it’s officially available starting today.

The new Google Home Speaker, priced at $99.99, hit store shelves on June 25, 2026, following pre-orders that began June 17. This isn’t just another iterative update to the Nest Audio line. It’s Google’s most significant smart speaker reinvention in years, replacing the old Google Assistant with Gemini for Home as its built-in voice assistant.

What actually makes this speaker different

The biggest shift here is how you talk to it. With Gemini for Home, you don’t need to memorize specific commands or speak in robotic phrases anymore. The speaker understands natural language the way a real person would. You can ask multi-step questions in one breath, like “dim the kitchen lights, start my favorite playlist, and set a timer for 20 minutes,” and it handles all of that without breaking a sweat.

Gemini Live lets you chat naturally, brainstorm ideas, and get expert help without the stiff, transactional feel of older voice assistants. The device also remembers context from your previous conversations, so if you’re mid-discussion about something, it doesn’t forget where you were.

The hardware itself got a refresh too. You’re getting 360-degree sound that fills the room evenly, plus a light ring on top that visually shows when Gemini is listening, thinking, or responding. It comes in four colors: Berry, Jade, Hazel, and Porcelain. All four shades are available in the U.S., but the UK and Australia only get Porcelain and Hazel.

  • Google Home smart speaker in the Berry color finish displayed on stacked hardcover books beside a decorative sculpture, featuring a vibrant pink fabric mesh exterior and compact rounded design.
  • Google Home smart speaker in the Jade color finish displayed on stacked hardcover books beside a decorative sculpture, showcasing the soft green fabric mesh design and rounded compact form.
  • Google Home smart speaker in the Hazel color finish resting on stacked hardcover books beside a decorative sculpture, highlighting the speaker's compact spherical design and fabric mesh exterior.
  • Google Home smart speaker in the Porcelain color finish placed on stacked hardcover books next to a decorative sculpture, featuring a clean off-white fabric mesh exterior and minimalist spherical design.

The subscription catch you need to know about

Here’s where things get a bit complicated. While the $99.99 price tag gets you the speaker and basic features like reminders, smart home controls, and quick answers, you’ll need a Google Home Premium subscription to unlock Gemini’s full capabilities.

That means features like Gemini Live for real-time conversational chat, Camera History Search (which lets you search through compatible Nest camera activity), and Home Briefs (a summary of what happened while you were away) are gated behind the subscription. The Standard plan costs $10 per month or $100 per year, while the Advanced is $20 per month or $200 per year.

There’s a nice bonus, though: if you buy the speaker before September 30, 2026, you get six months of Google Home Premium Standard included—that’s a $60 value. And if you already subscribe to Google AI Pro or Ultra plans, you automatically get Google Home Premium at no extra cost. AI Ultra subscribers even get the Advanced tier free.

Smart home control that actually works

The speaker shines when you’re managing your smart home. You can control compatible devices, manage routines, and get fast answers using natural language. It pairs nicely with the Google TV Streamer for enhanced audio experience, turning your living room into a more cohesive entertainment setup.

For tech-savvy users, the advanced automation creation features (available with Home Premium) let you build custom routines that respond to specific triggers or conditions. This is especially useful if you have a complex smart home setup with multiple devices from different brands.

Google revealed this speaker alongside a fresh range of smart home devices and videobells in October 2025, promising a spring 2026 launch. Now we’re deep into summer, and the moment has finally arrived. This timing delay was probably frustrating for early adopters, but it makes sense when you consider how much reengineering went into building a speaker specifically for Gemini rather than just retrofitting old Assistant tech.

The Google Home Speaker replaces both the Nest Audio and Nest Mini, consolidating Google’s smart speaker lineup into one flagship device. That’s a bold move, but given the substantial upgrade in AI capabilities, it’s hard to argue with the strategy.

If you’re a smart home early adopter or just curious about what Gemini-powered voice assistants can actually do in real life, the Google Home Speaker is worth the $99.99 investment. The natural language understanding is genuinely impressive, and the 360-degree sound quality is a step up from the Nest Mini it replaces.

The subscription requirement for advanced features is a bit of a letdown, especially since the most interesting AI capabilities like Gemini Live and Camera History Search aren’t free. But with six months of Home Premium Standard included for eligible purchases, you get a solid runway to test whether the premium tier is worth keeping.

The new Google Home Speaker is available now at the Google Store and through retailers like Best Buy. Whether you’re upgrading from an old Nest device or just adding your first smart speaker to the home, this is the most compelling option on the market right now for anyone who wants voice control that actually feels natural.
