Google’s new MCP tools stop Gemini agents from hallucinating old APIs

Google DeepMind is tired of AI agents shipping broken, outdated Gemini code, so it’s giving them a direct line into live Gemini API docs and patterns.

Google Gemini AI. The image shows the word "Gemini" written in a modern, sans-serif font on a black background. The letters "G" and "e" are in a gradient blue color, while the letters "m," "i," "n," and "i" transition from a light blue to a light beige color. Above the second "i" in "Gemini," there is a stylized star or sparkle symbol, adding a celestial or futuristic touch to the design.

Google DeepMind is rolling out a new way to make AI coding assistants a lot less clueless about the latest Gemini APIs — and a lot more reliable for real-world development. Instead of guessing from outdated training data, coding agents can now tap directly into live documentation and best-practice playbooks through a pair of tools called Gemini API Docs MCP and Gemini API Developer Skills.

Here’s the core problem Google is trying to solve: most AI coding agents were trained at a fixed point in time, so when the Gemini API changes, those agents keep suggesting old methods, wrong parameters or suboptimal model configs. That’s annoying if you’re prototyping, and downright risky if you’re wiring AI into production services.

The new Gemini API Docs MCP (built on the Model Context Protocol) acts like a direct pipeline from your agent to Google’s current Gemini API docs, SDK references and model info. Instead of relying on whatever the model remembers, the agent can query up-to-date endpoints, parameters and recommended configurations on the fly, then generate code that actually matches today’s SDKs.

On top of that, the Gemini API Developer Skills layer provides opinionated guidance: best-practice instructions, patterns and resource links that nudge the agent toward how Google itself recommends you use the SDKs. Think of it as shipping your agent with a built‑in senior engineer who keeps saying, “No, do it this way, this is the current pattern.”

Used alone, each tool already tightens things up, but Google is pretty blunt that the real gains show up when you combine them. In internal evals, pairing MCP with Skills drove a 96.3% pass rate on their test set while cutting tokens per correct answer by 63% compared with plain prompting, which means agents not only get more tasks right but do it with far less prompt bloat.

Bar chart comparing AI coding agent pass rates with four vertical bars labeled Vanilla (7.7%), MCP (72.6%), Skill (82.9%), and Skill + MCP (96.3%), above two dark code blocks showing terminal commands to install the Gemini API developer skill (npx skills add google-gemini/gemini-skills --skill gemini-api-dev --global) and add the Gemini API Docs MCP server (npx add-mcp gemini-api-docs-mcp.dev) on a clean white interface.

For developers, the pitch is simple: hook your coding agent into Gemini’s live docs via MCP, add the Gemini API Developer Skills package, and you get an assistant that writes code matching the latest APIs, follows current SDK idioms and is cheaper to run because it needs fewer tokens to reach a good answer. Google is positioning this as a foundation for more trustworthy AI pair programmers and autonomous agents, especially for teams already building on Gemini.
