If you’ve ever felt like your Google Calendar was just a sea of the same handful of shades—where your morning workout, team meeting, and dentist appointment all somehow ended up wearing the same shade of “muted blue”—you aren’t alone. For years, the platform has kept users within a very narrow lane, offering just 11 predefined colors to organize our increasingly complex lives. It was one of those small, nagging frustrations that power users have been vocal about for a long time.
Well, Google has finally listened, and they’re giving us a much broader canvas to paint with.
In an update that began rolling out in mid-June 2026, Google Calendar is dramatically expanding its color palette. We are moving from that restrictive list of 11 to an impressive range of up to 200 custom colors for individual events. Whether you are trying to color-code your life to the nth degree or you just want your calendar to be a bit more visually pleasing, this is a massive quality-of-life win.
Here’s how it works: Everyone will now see 24 default colors available right out of the gate. But the real magic happens on the web version of Google Calendar, where you can tap into a full RGB color picker. This means you can finally dial in exact hex codes to match your project aesthetic, coordinate with your company’s brand colors, or just find the perfect pastel that keeps your eyes from glazing over during a hectic week.
Once you’ve curated those colors on the web or via the Calendar API, they will sync across to your mobile apps, ensuring your color-coded system stays consistent no matter where you are checking your schedule.
It is worth noting that this update is a “silent” rollout of sorts—there are no complex admin toggles or settings for IT departments to manage. It’s simply being turned on for everyone, from personal account holders to Google Workspace enterprise customers. If you don’t see the new options immediately, don’t sweat it; the rollout is being handled in stages. Rapid Release domains started seeing the update around June 17, while those on Scheduled Release domains are slated to get the feature starting June 29, with a full deployment expected to take a few weeks.
For those of us who live by our calendars, this is exactly the kind of “small” update that actually changes how you interact with your day. It’s no longer about just marking time; it’s about creating a visual language that makes sense to you. Suddenly, those urgent tasks can get the bold red they deserve, while personal milestones can stand out in a soft, custom shade you actually like. It’s a simple change, but it’s a long-overdue one that makes one of our most essential productivity tools feel a little more human.
Are you planning to overhaul your color-coding system with these new options, or are you keeping it simple with the new 24 defaults?
