Apple Inc. invented the iPad as a brand of iOS and iPadOS-based tablet computers. It is the successor of the Newton MessagePad and a pre-production version of the PowerBook Duo-based tablet computer. The iPad was conceptualized by Apple before the iPhone, however, the latter was created and released sooner.

Prior to its unveiling on January 20, 2010, rumors about the original iPad began in 2002 and focused on its development, operating system, and availability. The original iPad range is comprised of four models, including the iPad Mini, iPad Air, and iPad Pro.

It was first released with the iPhone's iOS operating system, which was eventually forked into iPadOS with improved hardware support and a user experience tailored to the larger screen. The original iPad model earned positive reviews for its software and was named one of the year's most influential inventions of 2010.

It's used in different settings, including business, education, healthcare, technology, and personal use. Wi-Fi only and Wi-Fi with cellular support are the two options. The Apple Pencil, Smart Case, Smart Keyboard, Smart Keyboard Folio, Magic Keyboard, and many adapters were among the accessories available.

Origin Story

"What we want to do is put an incredibly great computer in a book that you can carry around with you and learn how to use in 20 minutes... and we really want to do it with a radio link in it so you don't have to hook up to anything and you're in communication with all of these larger databases and other computers," Steve Jobs said in a 1983 speech.

The Newton MessagePad, Apple's first tablet computer and the iPad's predecessor, was released in 1993. Apple reportedly created a prototype of a PowerBook Duo-based tablet computer but decided not to market it in order to protect MessagePad sales.

The Newton MessagePad was created under the position of John Sculley, who took over as Apple's CEO after Steve Jobs stepped down in 1985. The MessagePad was a technological flop, with handwriting recognition that frequently resulted in a jumble of unintelligible words. Jobs dropped the MessagePad when he returned to Apple in 1997.

The iPad tablet computer was first predicted in 2002 when Apple's linked supplier Quanta revealed orders for wireless displays from Apple. After a concept design of the iPad was disclosed by US Design Patent No. D504,889 in May 2005, blogger Rob Bushway theorized that it might run on a stripped-down version of OS X.

The interest then shifted to Intel, which was reportedly visited by Apple in search of a processor to put in one of their upcoming devices, possibly the iPad. The Taiwan Economic News reported in September 2009 that the iPad would be revealed in February 2010, citing "industry sources," however it was actually announced in January 2010.

The iPad was conceived before the iPhone, despite the fact that the iPhone was built and released chronologically before the iPad.

Jonathan Ive (Apple's Chief Design Officer from September 1992 to July 2019) designed the Macintosh Folio, a stylus-based tablet, in 1991, laying the groundwork for Apple's larger tablet prototype project codenamed K48 (the iPad) that began in 2004. After attempting to build the tablet first, I agreed with Jobs that the iPhone was more necessary and the order was reversed.
