Microsoft is preparing to end support for some of Apple‘s oldest still-supported iPhones and iPads in the OneDrive app, meaning users of those devices will soon stop receiving new features, bug fixes, and security improvements unless they upgrade to a newer version of iOS or iPadOS.

The upcoming change affects devices that remain on iOS 18 and iPadOS 18. Once Microsoft raises OneDrive’s minimum operating system requirement, several popular Apple devices—including the iPhone XR, iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, and the seventh-generation iPad—will no longer be eligible for future OneDrive updates.

According to Microsoft’s latest TestFlight beta release notes, OneDrive version 18.12.1 will be the final version compatible with iOS 18 and iPadOS 18. While Microsoft hasn’t announced a public rollout date for the change, the company has already updated the App Store listing for OneDrive with a warning that support for iOS and iPadOS 18 will be discontinued “soon.” Users are encouraged to upgrade to iOS 26 or iOS 27, where supported, to continue receiving the latest versions of the app.

Which Apple devices are affected?

The devices losing access to future OneDrive updates include:

  • iPhone XR
  • iPhone XS
  • iPhone XS Max
  • iPad (7th generation)

These models cannot upgrade to Apple’s latest supported operating systems, leaving them behind once Microsoft changes OneDrive’s minimum requirements.

Existing OneDrive installations should keep working—for now

The good news is that OneDrive won’t suddenly stop functioning on affected devices. Existing installations are expected to continue syncing files for the time being. However, users won’t receive:

  • New features
  • Performance improvements
  • Bug fixes
  • Security updates

Over time, that could lead to compatibility issues as Microsoft’s cloud storage service evolves.

This is a common lifecycle for mobile apps. Developers periodically raise minimum operating system requirements so they can take advantage of newer APIs, security enhancements, and platform capabilities without maintaining compatibility with aging hardware.

Why this matters

Although the iPhone XR and iPhone XS debuted in 2018, they have remained popular thanks to Apple’s unusually long software support window. Apple’s move to iOS 26 ended operating system support for these devices, making Microsoft’s decision a natural next step as developers begin targeting newer versions of iOS.

For users who rely on OneDrive to back up photos, documents, or work files, the change doesn’t require an immediate device upgrade. But anyone wanting ongoing updates and security improvements will eventually need to move to a newer iPhone or iPad capable of running Microsoft’s future OneDrive releases.
