Apple TV+, Apple’s subscription service for movies and shows, has always been exclusive to Apple devices like iPhones, iPads, Macs, and Apple TV boxes. But according to a new report, that might be changing.
Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman spotted a recent job listing that suggests Apple is building an entirely new app – for Android devices. The listing mentions developing “fun new features” for an application “used by millions to watch and discover TV and sports.” This strongly hints at an Android version of the Apple TV+ app, similar to what Apple did with Apple Music.
Traditionally, Apple keeps its apps exclusive to its own ecosystem to encourage users to buy Apple devices. However, with Apple Music, they saw the potential to expand their reach and gain more subscribers. This seems to be the strategy behind the potential Android app for Apple TV+.
Streaming giants like Netflix, Disney+, and Amazon Prime Video are available on almost every platform, giving them a wider audience. By bringing Apple TV+ to Android, Apple hopes to compete more effectively in the streaming market.
Sure, they might not sell more iPhones or iPads, but they’ll be opening their high-quality shows and movies (including award-winning titles like CODA and Ted Lasso) to a massive new audience. This could lead to a significant increase in subscriptions for Apple TV+.
The global user base for Android dwarfs that of iOS, so an Android app could be a game-changer for Apple TV+. The service is already available on some smart TVs, streaming devices like Amazon Fire Sticks and Roku boxes, and even Chromecast. But reaching the billions of Android users worldwide would be a major boost.
While it might take some time before the app launches (considering they’re still hiring for the development team), the prospect is certainly exciting for Apple TV+ and its viewers.
