Apple kicked off WWDC 2024 with a bang, unveiling the next iteration of its Mac operating system, macOS 15 Sequoia. This major update brings a wave of new features designed to boost user productivity and seamlessly integrate the Mac with the wider Apple ecosystem.

The centerpiece of macOS Sequoia is undoubtedly Apple Intelligence, a suite of AI features aimed at streamlining daily tasks across iPhones, iPads, and Macs. This includes Writing Tools, a system-wide feature that can summarize lengthy emails, suggest replies, and even help you craft entire documents. Siri is also getting a major upgrade, transforming from a simple voice assistant into a powerful tool that can act on your behalf within apps and access your personal information to provide contextually relevant responses. All this magic happens through voice commands, but Siri now understands typed instructions as well. However, Apple Intelligence comes with a caveat: it requires an M1 chip or later and won’t be fully available until the public beta launches in July.

A long-awaited feature for Mac users is finally here: iPhone mirroring. Sequoia allows you to wirelessly access and control your iPhone directly from your Mac, complete with audio playback. You can view and respond to notifications, seamlessly drag and drop text and images between devices, essentially giving you a non-touchscreen interface for your phone. For added security, your iPhone remains locked and even enters standby mode when mirrored.

With iPhone Mirroring, a user wirelessly uses their iPhone 15 Pro from the desktop of their MacBook Pro.

Apple hasn’t forgotten about Safari either. The web browser receives a significant update with features like Highlights, which leverages machine learning to identify and summarize key points on web pages. Reader mode gets a boost with the addition of summaries and tables of contents, making it easier to navigate lengthy articles. Additionally, Safari introduces the Viewer mode specifically designed for embedded videos, offering full playback control and Picture-in-Picture support.

Keychain is getting a major overhaul with the introduction of the Passwords app. This app goes beyond simple password management, storing a wider range of credentials like Wi-Fi passwords, passkeys, verification codes, and even shared passwords. The best part? Passwords are available across all Apple devices – iPhone, iPad, Mac, and even Apple Watch – and sync with Windows machines through iCloud for Windows.

Apple is finally bringing automatic window tiling to macOS, putting an end to the reliance on third-party utilities. This feature allows you to easily arrange windows side-by-side or snap them to corners with a simple drag-and-drop motion, maximizing your screen real estate and streamlining your workflow.

Apple isn’t leaving gamers behind. Sequoia brings beloved titles like Resident Evil 2, Resident Evil: Biohazard, Control, and the next World of Warcraft expansion, The War Within, to the Mac platform. Additionally, the company is releasing the second iteration of its Game Porting Toolkit, incorporating developer-requested features that will make porting games to macOS, iPhone, and iPad easier than ever.

While macOS Sequoia is compatible with most Macs, there are some limitations. The full range of features, including iPhone mirroring, is exclusive to Macs equipped with Apple Silicon or the T2 security chip, found in select Intel-based Macs from 2017 to 2019.

With the introduction of macOS Sequoia, Apple is taking a significant leap forward in artificial intelligence integration and cross-device connectivity. From the powerful Apple Intelligence suite to long-awaited features like iPhone mirroring and automatic window tiling, Sequoia promises to make Macs even more user-friendly and productive. The developer beta is available now, with the public beta arriving in July and the full release slated for fall 2024. So, get ready to experience the future of Mac computing with macOS Sequoia.
