The latest M4 chips not coming to Mac Studio, Mac Pro until mid-2025

Professional Mac users will need to exercise patience, as Apple's top-tier Mac Studio and Mac Pro aren't slated for M4 chip upgrades until the middle of next year.

Apple‘s mightiest desktop machines, the Mac Studio and Mac Pro, will remain stuck on last year’s silicon for at least another 12 months, according to a new report. While the rest of the Mac lineup transitions to the company’s latest M4 chips throughout 2024, the top-tier desktops won’t make the leap until mid-2025 at the earliest.

The revelation comes from Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman‘s “Power On” newsletter. Gurman, who has cultivated a reputation as one of the most reliable sources for insider Apple intelligence, says both the Mac Studio and Mac Pro will soldier on with M2-generation processors this year.

In an amusing twist, the iPad Pro‘s M4 chip will continue to outperform the Mac Studio and Mac Pro in critical areas like single-core performance for around another year. Benchmark testing shows the tablet silicon decisively outpacing even the range-topping M2 Ultra—by as much as 25 percent in some metrics.

Of course, such comparisons are mostly academic. The M2 Ultra remains the undisputed champion for multi-core workloads, where it truly shines. The Mac Studio and Mac Pro also offer unmatched memory capacities, expansive connectivity options, and superior thermal management compared to their mobile counterparts.

Still, the optics are unusual: Apple’s top tablets and phones flexing greater single-threaded muscle than the vaunted all-in-one and tower desktops crafted for professional creators and power users.

Ultimately, the report underscores Apple’s methodical approach to professional hardware updates—pro users have grown accustomed to waiting over a year between major revisions. And there’s little doubt the M4 chips will elevate the Mac Studio and Mac Pro to dizzying new performance heights once they arrive in 2025.
