Let’s be real: most of us don’t imagine ourselves as victims of theft. But when it happens, especially with something as personal as your iPhone, the shock can be overwhelming. While you might hope for the best, it’s wise to prepare for the worst. And sometimes, the simplest steps can make a big difference in protecting your data and personal information.

Here’s the thing: once a thief gets your iPhone, chasing them down is probably not the best (or safest) plan. But the good news? You don’t have to. With the right settings in place, you can lock them out, track the phone’s location, and prevent them from wiping your device or accessing your personal information. The bad news? Many thieves are savvy enough to know how to quickly disable features that allow you to do this. The key is to act fast and know which settings to tweak right now — before anything happens.

Let’s walk through the essential changes that will make your iPhone harder to steal — or at least harder to fully exploit once it’s in the wrong hands.

Step 1: Disable Control Center, Wallet, and Accessories

Imagine this: a thief snatches your phone and the first thing they do is swipe down to access Control Center, where they can quickly enable Airplane Mode. Why is this bad? Because it instantly disconnects your iPhone from the internet, making it impossible for you to track it using Find My iPhone. Sneaky, right?

Here’s how to prevent that:

  1. Go to Settings.
  2. Tap Face ID & Passcode.
  3. Scroll down and disable Control Center, Wallet, and USB Accessories when locked.

By doing this, you’re cutting off the thief’s ability to turn on Airplane Mode without unlocking your phone. You’re also preventing them from plugging it into a computer to wipe your device and start fresh. Suddenly, your iPhone just became a lot less useful to them.

Step 2: Enable Share My Location

Once you’ve blocked access to Control Center, it’s time to ensure that your phone can still be located, even if the thief tries to get clever. This is where Find My iPhone comes in — but you have to make sure it’s properly set up.

  1. Go to Settings.
  2. Tap Privacy & Security.
  3. Select Location Services, and then enable Share My Location.
  4. Now, go to Find My and make sure everything (yes, everything) is turned on. This includes Find My iPhone, Find My Network, and Send Last Location.

Why does this matter? If your iPhone is turned off or in Airplane Mode, the Find My Network will still help you track it. If the battery dies, Send Last Location will give you the last place your iPhone was spotted before it went dark.

Step 3: Track your iPhone like a pro

Okay, so let’s say the worst happens, and your iPhone is stolen. What now? You can still track it with a few quick moves.

Grab a friend’s iPhone (or any device with access to the internet), and do the following:

  1. Open the Find My app.
  2. Scroll down and click on Help a Friend.
  3. Log in using your Apple ID, and voilà — you should be able to see the current location of your iPhone on a map.

At this point, you can remotely lock your iPhone, display a message, or even erase all data on the device (if you’ve completely given up on retrieving it). The goal here is simple: limit the thief’s access to your personal information and possibly recover your iPhone before they get too far.

Final thoughts

No one wants to think about the possibility of their phone getting stolen. It’s one of those “it’ll never happen to me” scenarios — until it does. But by taking just a few minutes to adjust your iPhone’s settings, you’re making it infinitely harder for a thief to do any real damage. You might not be able to prevent the actual theft, but you can certainly make life difficult for anyone who tries to profit off your loss.

Remember: a little preparation goes a long way. So, tweak those settings today, and keep your peace of mind tomorrow.
