Forget what you heard about the iPhone 17 having a crazy-powerful 2nm chip. According to someone who usually knows what they’re talking about with Apple stuff, that’s just not happening.

This leak comes from a chip expert on Weibo (think China’s Twitter) with 25 years in the game. They say the new 2nm process won’t be ready for mass production until late 2025, meaning the iPhone 17 will probably stick with the same 3nm chip that’s in the iPhone 15 Pro and the latest iPad Pro.

Apparently, anyone who knows about chip production timelines can smell this rumor from a mile away. Sure, Apple’s chipmaker buddy TSMC is planning to make 2nm chips next year, but they likely need more time to get things running smoothly before they crank them out in mass quantities.

Apple usually gets first access to TSMC’s latest chips, and they gobbled up all the 3nm chips last year for their iPhones, iPads, and Macs. The 2nm process is supposed to be a big leap, making things 10-15% faster or giving you 25-30% better battery life compared to the current 3nm chips.

Here’s the good news: Code hidden in the new iOS 18 suggests all the iPhone 16 models will sport Apple’s next-gen A18 chip, built on an improved version of the 3nm process. Think of it as a more affordable and tweaked version of the current tech.

This chip expert has a good track record of predicting Apple’s moves. They nailed the iPhone 7 being waterproof, the regular iPhone 14 keeping the older A15 chip, and the fancy A16 chip being exclusive to the iPhone 14 Pro models. They even knew about Apple working on its own AI server processor using the 3nm process, expected for production later in 2025.
