Apple‘s annual WWDC developer conference is just around the corner, and rumors are swirling about how the tech giant plans to integrate artificial intelligence (AI) technology into its next generation of iPhones, iPads, and Macs.
According to reports from Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman, Apple has been working on its own in-house AI features, with a mix of processing happening directly on the device and leveraging the cloud. However, it seems Apple is also looking beyond its own walls, reportedly partnering with OpenAI to bring its popular ChatGPT chatbot to iOS 18.
This move comes despite some internal resistance at Apple. Gurman’s sources indicate that some executives still hold reservations about AI chatbots. However, the undeniable popularity of these conversational tools has seemingly pushed Apple to embrace this technology for its mobile devices.
While the partnership with OpenAI is expected to be announced at WWDC, it might not be the only option on the table. Gurman suggests Apple might be open to working with other AI providers in the future, negotiating deals on a case-by-case basis. The current collaboration with OpenAI appears to be a strategic move, giving Apple time to refine its own AI technology.
Interestingly, Apple seems to be taking a cautious approach when it comes to user exposure. Unlike Google’s recent misstep with its AI Overviews, which generated nonsensical responses and damaged the company’s reputation, Apple is reportedly planning to make these AI features opt-in on iOS 18. This means users who are wary of AI interaction can simply choose not to activate them.
