Apple has announced the HomePod mini 2, a next-generation version of its compact smart speaker that adds support for a more conversational Siri AI, enhanced audio capabilities, and new ways to personalize the listening experience. The new speaker retains the HomePod mini’s compact design while expanding its role in Apple’s connected-home ecosystem.
Announced today, October 13, 2026, the HomePod mini 2 is priced at $149 in the US. Preorders open today, with availability beginning Friday, October 30. Buyers can choose from five colors: pink, green, blue, white, and midnight.
The headline addition is Siri AI, Apple’s upgraded assistant powered by the next generation of Apple Intelligence. However, this feature will arrive through a future software update rather than being available immediately at launch.
HomePod mini 2 brings a more conversational Siri AI
Siri AI is designed to make the HomePod mini more useful for everyday tasks by combining personal context, broader world knowledge, and the ability to work across more apps. Apple says users will be able to have more natural, back-and-forth conversations with the assistant instead of relying exclusively on individual voice commands.
With a compatible Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone or iPad paired with the HomePod mini 2, users will be able to ask Siri to help with tasks that span multiple apps. For example, they could ask Siri to find a song recommended by a friend in Messages, create a reminder associated with a calendar event or location, find a recipe mentioned in an email, or add ingredients to a grocery list.
Siri AI will also be able to answer questions on a broad range of topics using up-to-date information from the web. HomePod mini 2 can recognize up to six household members by voice, allowing it to provide a more personalized experience.
To use Siri AI, the home owner must have an eligible Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone or iPad running the latest software, with Siri AI enabled and set to a supported language. The new capabilities will arrive through a free software update, subject to Apple’s compatibility, language, and availability requirements.
Apple says Siri AI will initially be available in English in the US, Australia, Canada, India, New Zealand, Singapore, South Africa, and the UK.
Rich 360-degree audio and a new home theater setup
The HomePod mini 2 continues to deliver 360-degree audio from its compact spherical design. Users can deploy a single speaker, pair two speakers for stereo sound, or connect multiple HomePod speakers for multiroom audio.
Under the hood, the new speaker uses Apple’s S10 chip and computational audio processing to analyze music in real time and optimize dynamic range, loudness, and acoustic performance. Apple has not provided detailed numerical comparisons of its audio performance against the previous HomePod mini, so the extent of any measurable sound-quality improvement remains unclear.
One of the more notable additions is support for a four-speaker surround sound setup when paired with the fourth-generation Apple TV 4K. Users can arrange four compatible speakers in matching front and rear pairs, using either four HomePod mini 2 units or four second-generation HomePod speakers.

The system can identify the speakers’ positions in the room and calibrate audio timing and levels to the space. This setup requires the compatible Apple TV 4K and the latest operating system software, making it an option for people already invested in Apple’s home entertainment ecosystem.
The HomePod mini 2 can also serve as a speaker for compatible Mac computers, delivering audio for movies, games, FaceTime calls, and other activities. Apple specifies support for Macs equipped with Wi-Fi 6E or later.

Sound Glow adds music-synchronized lighting
Apple is introducing Sound Glow, a feature that turns the illuminated top of the HomePod mini 2 into a visual extension of whatever is playing.
The lighting pulses in sync with music, reacting to bass and treble in real time. Album artwork from the Now Playing interface can also influence the colors, creating a light effect tailored to individual songs.
For a different atmosphere, users can select soundscapes such as rain, which trigger corresponding animations. The feature adds a visual element to the speaker without requiring a separate lighting accessory.
Apple notes that voice control for Sound Glow requires an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone running the latest software. This requirement applies to voice control, rather than to the lighting feature itself.
Smart home controls remain a central feature
Beyond music and Siri, the HomePod mini 2 continues to act as a smart home hub. Users can control compatible accessories with voice commands, including adjusting thermostats, operating blinds, turning off lights, and locking doors. The Home app also supports automations and scenes that coordinate multiple accessories.
As a home hub, the speaker enables users to manage compatible smart home devices remotely through the Home app on an iPhone. Sound Recognition can listen for smoke and carbon monoxide alarm sounds and send notifications to an iPhone, iPad, or Apple Watch when it detects them. Apple cautions that this feature should not be relied upon as a substitute for dedicated smoke and carbon monoxide alarms or other safety systems.

The speaker also supports compatible smart home cameras and video doorbells, including features that can announce who is at the door when HomeKit Secure Video and Face Recognition are configured.
Apple’s newly announced Home Collection accessories are scheduled to begin arriving in December, with select accessories following in early 2027. Their availability should not be confused with the HomePod mini 2’s October release.
Privacy and environmental considerations
Apple says privacy remains central to the HomePod mini 2. Siri requests can be processed on the device or through Private Cloud Compute, Apple’s cloud-processing system designed to extend device-level privacy protections to server-based processing. Apple says data processed through Private Cloud Compute is not stored or made accessible to Apple or other parties.
The company is also highlighting recycled materials in the speaker. According to Apple, these include 100% recycled rare earth elements in its magnets, along with 100% recycled copper, gold plating, and tin solder in Apple-designed printed circuit boards.
Apple also describes the speaker’s packaging as fiber-based, excluding adhesives, inks, and coatings from its calculation. These environmental figures are Apple’s own disclosures.
HomePod mini 2 price and availability
The HomePod mini 2 costs $149 in the US. Preorders begin today, October 13, through Apple’s online store and Apple Store app, with retail availability starting October 30.
The new model costs $20 more than the original HomePod mini‘s current $129 price following Apple’s June 2026 price increase. The original HomePod mini launched at $99 in 2020, making the new model $50 more expensive than the original’s launch price.
The five available colors are pink, green, blue, white, and midnight. Siri AI will arrive later as a free software update, with initial English-language availability planned for the US, Australia, Canada, India, New Zealand, Singapore, South Africa, and the UK. The speaker is compatible with HomePod software 27.2.
The HomePod mini 2 is a focused hardware refresh, but its planned Siri AI upgrade could make it a more capable part of Apple’s connected home. The combination of conversational voice assistance, Sound Glow, Mac audio support, and four-speaker surround sound gives the compact speaker a broader role than simply playing music. However, buyers interested primarily in the new Siri experience will need to wait for the promised software update after launch.
