Apple confirmed to release iOS 16 and watchOS 9 on Sept. 12

Apple said today that on Monday, September 12, all users with compatible iPhone and Apple Watch models would be able to get iOS 16 and watchOS 9.

In the months after Apple’s initial June 2022 preview, iOS 16 has been put through beta testing with app developers and participants in the public beta test. iOS 16 is the best update in iOS history with important improvements including an overhauled and customizable Lock Screen, the capacity to temporarily edit iMessages, and much more.

Users can modify a range of visual elements in the new Lock Screen to build the perfect Lock Screen. Also, users can add widgets, new wallpapers with depth effects, new fonts, colors for the clock, and more.

In addition to improving the Lock Screen, Apple has also added features that were requested often to the Messages app. With iOS 16, users can now edit messages up to 15 minutes after sending them and can undo messages up to 2 minutes after they may have sent them accidentally. iOS 16 also includes updates for SharePlay and collaboration in Messages.

Apple is also refining features like Spotlight search in other important services like Mail and Safari while also introducing new ones like undo and schedule send for emails, Shared Tab Groups, Safari Passkeys, and more. Notable additions to Apple Maps include support for transit cards and multi-stop routing.

Apple is not launching iOS 16 and iPadOS 16 at the same time as it did in prior years. iPadOS 16 will be made available later this fall, while iOS 16 will be made available to iPhone users on September 12.

Apple Watch Series 4 and newer are compatible with watchOS 9. watchOS 9 requires iPhone 8 or later with iOS 16 or later and one of the following Apple Watch models:

  • Apple Watch Series 7
