Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars get new release dates in December

Fans will now have to wait until late 2026 and 2027 for Marvel’s next two Avengers movies, which feature a star-packed, multiversal storyline.

Marvel fans, brace yourselves: the studio has officially reshuffled its Phase Six roadmap, moving both Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars from their original spring premieres to the lucrative holiday season. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Doomsday—once slated for May 1, 2026—will now land on December 18, 2026, while Secret Wars shifts from May 7, 2027, to December 17, 2027.

  • Avengers: Doomsday: May 1st → December 18, 2026
  • Avengers: Secret Wars: May 7th → December 17, 2027

Disney’s scheduling swap leaves a prime summer slot open for The Devil Wears Prada 2 on May 1, 2026, and cements the two Avengers tentpoles as year-end blockbusters, a strategy reminiscent of Marvel’s late-year push with titles like Captain America: Civil War and Black Panther.

Multiple factors likely influenced Marvel’s calendar overhaul:

  1. Production scope: Both films promise the largest crossover in MCU history, weaving together characters from the Avengers, X-Men, Fantastic Four, Thunderbolts, Wakanda, and more. That scale demands extra post-production time for visual effects and seamless storytelling.
  2. Box-office positioning: December releases allow Marvel to capitalize on holiday audiences and avoid head-to-head clashes with other tentpoles. Notably, Dune 3: Messiah will also debut December 18, 2026, setting up a December “mega-clash” akin to “Barbenheimer.”
  3. Phase six cohesion: By clustering its flagship Avengers installments in consecutive Decembers, Marvel keeps momentum high entering 2028, laying groundwork for Phase Seven.

Anthony and Joe Russo, architects of Infinity War and Endgame, are back at the helm, producing through their AGBO banner and directing both epics. Insiders say Marvel entrusted them with these films precisely to recapture the cosmic spectacle and emotional heft of their previous Avengers outings.

“We’ve always aimed to create our own version of Secret Wars, drawing inspiration from both the 1980s and 2010s runs,” Joe Russo teased in an exclusive interview. Fans should expect the Russos’ signature blend of character drama and large-scale action.

In a seismic shift, Robert Downey Jr. will don the armor—not as Tony Stark, but as Victor von Doom (Doctor Doom). Reports suggest Marvel “spent big” to secure Downey’s services, banking on his star power to anchor the saga’s central villain arc.

Downey’s transformation into Doom marks a departure from his Iron Man legacy, and industry chatter hints at a multi-film contract. By debuting Doom in Doomsday and carrying him through Secret Wars, Marvel aims to elevate its rogues’ gallery to the level of Thanos.

From Day One, Doomsday has been billed as the MCU’s grandest crossover:

  • Core Avengers: Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson’s Natasha Romanoff (in flashbacks or multiversal form), alongside new blood from 2025’s Thunderbolts*.
  • X-Men reunion: Ian McKellen (Magneto), Rebecca Romijn (Mystique), and James Marsden (Cyclops), reprising their Fox-era roles in a movie years in the making.
  • Fantastic Four: Stars from Fantastic Four: First Steps (Jul 25 2025) will crossover in Doomsday, forging the MCU’s inaugural mash-up with Reed Richards & Co.
  • Chris Evans: The Captain America alums’ cameo remains unconfirmed, but sources say Evans has a “surprise role” in Doomsday—possibly an alternate-universe Steve Rogers or a new hero identity.

The delays, while disappointing to eager fans, underscore Marvel’s commitment to delivering meticulously crafted spectacles. A December launch gives each film breathing room at the box office and ensures the epic finales don’t get lost in the summer blockbuster shuffle. Cinematic universes depend on patient payoff; it seems Marvel is betting that a seven-month wait will be worth it when Doom’s reign begins.
