Rivian, the electric vehicle (EV) startup, has announced plans to introduce a hands-free driver assistance system for its R1T and R1S models later this year, with an “eyes-off” version slated for release in 2026. This development was revealed by CEO RJ Scaringe during a recent press roundtable.

The forthcoming hands-free system is expected to function similarly to existing Level 2 driver assistance technologies like Ford’s BlueCruise and General Motors’ Super Cruise. These systems allow for hands-free driving on pre-mapped highways but still require drivers to remain attentive. The subsequent “eyes-off” version aims to elevate this capability, potentially allowing drivers to divert their attention from the road under certain conditions.

Currently, Rivian’s Generation 2 vehicles are equipped with the Rivian Autonomy Platform, a suite of driver assistance and safety features that provide 360-degree visibility through eleven high-resolution cameras, five radars, and redundant sensors. This system enhances driving by automatically steering and adjusting speed as needed.

However, it remains uncertain whether the new hands-free software will be compatible with existing Generation 1 and Generation 2 vehicles or if it will be exclusive to future models, such as the anticipated R2 SUV. Generation 2 vehicles boast features like matrix headlights and a color-changing light bar, which could serve as indicators of autonomous operation.

Rivian’s current driver assistance system, known as Driver+, offers functionalities akin to Tesla‘s Autopilot, including lane-keeping and adaptive speed control on highways. Despite these advancements, drivers are still required to maintain attention on the road.

This announcement positions Rivian alongside other automakers striving to advance autonomous driving technologies. Notably, Mercedes-Benz is currently the only manufacturer offering a Level 3 autonomous system in the U.S., which permits a higher degree of driver disengagement under specific conditions.

As Rivian progresses with these innovations, the company is also addressing production challenges and financial considerations. Recently, Rivian secured up to $6.6 billion in financing from the U.S. Department of Energy to construct a production facility in Georgia, aiming to enhance its manufacturing capabilities.
