Casio, a name synonymous with dependable digital watches, is diving into the wearable future with a nostalgic twist: the CRW-001-1JR, a fully functional smart ring. Celebrating 50 years of digital watch innovation, this tiny timepiece debuts in Japan this December for ¥19,800 (approximately $128.28). While it might not be “smart” in the modern sense, its clever blend of retro aesthetics and compact design makes it stand out.
The CRW-001-1JR might look like a novelty, but it packs the DNA of classic Casio watches into a diminutive form. The ring features a less-than-an-inch retro six-segment LCD screen capable of displaying the time, date, and even dual time zones. True to Casio’s heritage, it’s equipped with functional buttons for features like a stopwatch and an alarm. Instead of sound, the alarm uses a flashing light—ideal for discretion in meetings or shared spaces.
Casio went all-in on craftsmanship, using a metal injection molding process for a seamless design that replicates its iconic timepieces. The ring is waterproof and powered by a single-button battery, promising a lifespan of about two years before needing a replacement. It’s more than a quirky gadget; it’s built to last.
The ring comes in a fixed US size 10.5, though spacers are included to fit smaller fingers. However, those with larger hands may find it more suitable as a collector’s item than a daily accessory. Like many of Casio’s special editions, the CRW-001-1JR is expected to be a Japan-exclusive and limited-edition release, further driving its appeal to enthusiasts.
The CRW-001-1JR isn’t just a piece of wearable tech—it’s a conversation starter. By bringing functionality to what started as a gacha capsule toy concept, Casio is reimagining what a digital watch can be. While it lacks modern “smart” features like fitness tracking or connectivity, it makes up for it with its distinctive retro charm and utility.
For fans of Casio’s legacy or those wanting a wearable with personality, the CRW-001-1JR offers a fun, nostalgic glimpse into the future of tech-inspired fashion.
