Apple’s iPad mini has finally received the kind of upgrade that makes its compact tablet lineup considerably more interesting. The new iPad mini with the A20 Pro chip brings an OLED display, a larger screen, a thinner and lighter design, faster connectivity, and improved performance over the A17 Pro model released in 2024.

But this isn’t just another processor upgrade. Apple has redesigned several important parts of the iPad mini experience, making the new model a more substantial generational leap than its predecessor.

The question is whether those improvements justify the higher starting price, particularly for people who can still find the A17 Pro iPad mini at a discount.

1. OLED finally comes to the iPad mini

The display is arguably the biggest reason to consider the new iPad mini. Apple has finally replaced the LCD panel used in the A17 Pro generation with OLED technology.

The A20 Pro iPad mini features an 8.5-inch Super Retina XDR OLED display, compared with the 8.3-inch Liquid Retina LCD display on its predecessor. Both maintain the same pixel density of 326 pixels per inch, so the newer model’s larger screen doesn’t come at the expense of sharpness.

The difference goes beyond the additional 0.2 inches.

OLED allows individual pixels to control their own illumination, producing deeper blacks, more vivid colors, and significantly higher contrast. Apple rates the new display at a 2,000,000:1 contrast ratio, making it a substantial improvement over the previous LCD panel.

Brightness is another important upgrade:

  • A20 Pro: 600 nits full-screen brightness and up to 1,200 nits peak brightness for HDR content.
  • A17 Pro: 500 nits maximum brightness.

The newer model also supports a minimum brightness of just 1 nit, which should make nighttime reading more comfortable.

Apple has additionally introduced an optional nano-texture glass finish on the 256GB and 512GB configurations. This reduces reflections and glare, particularly useful for people who frequently use their tablets outdoors.

For watching movies, reading, editing photographs, and playing games, the OLED display makes the A20 Pro model a considerably more attractive device.

2. A20 Pro brings a substantial performance upgrade

The A17 Pro was already a capable processor when Apple introduced it in 2024. It brought hardware-accelerated ray tracing, improved graphics performance, and Apple Intelligence support to the compact iPad.

However, the A20 Pro takes things considerably further.

Apple’s new processor is manufactured using a 2-nanometer process and features a redesigned CPU and GPU architecture.

Here’s how the configurations compare:

Processor specificationA20 ProA17 Pro
CPU coresUp to 66
GPU cores75
Neural Engine16-core16-core
Neural AcceleratorsYesNo
Hardware ray tracingYesYes
Process technology2nm3nm

There is an important storage-related distinction with the A20 Pro. Its 128GB and 256GB configurations feature a five-core CPU, while the 512GB configuration gets a six-core CPU. Both configurations have a seven-core GPU.

Apple claims the new iPad mini delivers up to 60% faster multithreaded CPU performance, up to 2.7 times faster graphics performance, and up to 4.5 times faster AI performance compared with the previous generation.

The GPU also incorporates Neural Accelerators, helping accelerate AI workloads directly on the device.

These improvements could be particularly useful for demanding games, 3D applications, photo editing, and running AI-powered applications.

For everyday activities such as browsing, reading, watching videos, and taking notes, the A17 Pro remains perfectly capable. The difference becomes more interesting when workloads become computationally demanding.

It’s worth remembering that Apple’s performance figures are manufacturer claims, not independent benchmark results.

3. A thinner and lighter design with water resistance

Apple has made the new iPad mini thinner and lighter without significantly increasing its overall footprint.

DimensionsA20 ProA17 Pro
Height195.3mm195.4mm
Width132.6mm134.8mm
Thickness5.4mm6.3mm
Wi-Fi weight255g293g

The A20 Pro model is approximately 14% thinner and 13% lighter than its predecessor.

That might not sound particularly dramatic, but saving 38 grams while reducing thickness by almost a millimeter makes a difference in a tablet designed primarily for portability.

The larger display also fits into essentially the same overall footprint, thanks to slimmer bezels.

Another important addition is IP67 water and dust resistance. The new iPad mini can withstand immersion in up to one meter of water for up to 30 minutes under controlled laboratory conditions.

The A17 Pro model doesn’t carry an equivalent IP-rated protection classification.

This makes the newer model more reassuring for people who regularly carry their tablets while traveling, working outdoors, or reading near a swimming pool. However, water resistance isn’t permanent and shouldn’t be treated as an invitation to expose the device to liquids.

The new model is available in Midnight and Starlight, replacing the previous generation’s Blue, Purple, Starlight, and Space Gray finishes.

4. Better connectivity with Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6

Connectivity is another area where the A20 Pro iPad mini moves ahead.

The new model introduces Apple’s N1 wireless networking chip, bringing Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and Thread support.

The A17 Pro iPad mini supports Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3.

Wi-Fi 7 offers access to newer wireless networking capabilities, although the actual benefits depend on having a compatible router and network infrastructure.

For people who frequently transfer large files, stream high-quality content, or work with wireless accessories, the newer connectivity standards offer more room for improvement.

Cellular models also receive an upgrade through Apple’s C2 modem, which Apple claims delivers up to 50% faster cellular data speeds compared with the previous generation.

Both generations support 5G cellular connectivity and eSIM.

The USB-C port, meanwhile, remains largely unchanged, with USB 3 data transfer speeds of up to 10Gbps.

5. Cameras and audio receive meaningful improvements

Apple hasn’t dramatically changed the camera resolution, but the newer iPad mini introduces some useful improvements.

Both generations feature a 12MP rear camera capable of recording 4K video at up to 60 frames per second.

However, the A20 Pro model adds Adaptive True Tone flash, improving low-light photography and document scanning.

Both tablets also feature a 12MP Center Stage front camera, but Apple has repositioned the newer model’s camera along the landscape edge, making it better suited to video calls when the tablet is used horizontally.

Audio is a more interesting upgrade.

The A17 Pro model uses conventional stereo speakers, whereas the A20 Pro introduces Apple’s Acoustic Display technology.

This system uses specially designed woofers coupled through the display to produce deeper bass and higher volume, alongside tweeters hidden between the glass and aluminum enclosure.

The new audio arrangement also contributes to the tablet’s sealed construction and IP67 rating.

For people who frequently watch movies, play games, or participate in video calls, this is a welcome hardware improvement.

6. Apple Intelligence, Siri AI, and iPadOS 27

Both iPad mini generations support Apple Intelligence, so purchasing the newer model isn’t necessary just to access Apple’s existing AI features.

However, the A20 Pro model arrives with iPadOS 27 and Apple’s next generation of Apple Intelligence, including the redesigned Siri AI experience.

Apple says Siri AI can understand personal context, recognize what’s displayed on the screen, and perform more useful actions across applications.

The A20 Pro’s Neural Accelerators and increased memory bandwidth also provide more processing capacity for demanding on-device AI workloads.

The A17 Pro remains compatible with Apple Intelligence, but it doesn’t have the same dedicated GPU Neural Accelerators found in the newer processor.

The new iPad mini therefore offers more headroom for future AI features and applications, although the availability of individual features will depend on software support, language, and regional availability.

7. Apple Pencil compatibility remains unchanged

There isn’t much to distinguish these two generations when it comes to Apple Pencil support.

Both work with:

  • Apple Pencil Pro
  • Apple Pencil (USB-C)

That means users can continue enjoying features such as pressure sensitivity, tilt sensitivity, and Apple Pencil hover.

Apple Pencil Pro also provides additional capabilities, including squeeze, barrel roll, haptic feedback, and Find My support.

If you’re upgrading from an A17 Pro iPad mini, there’s no immediate need to purchase another Apple Pencil.

8. Battery life remains at up to 10 hours

Despite introducing a new OLED panel, a more powerful processor, and a thinner design, Apple continues to advertise up to 10 hours of battery life for both generations.

That rating applies to web browsing over Wi-Fi or watching videos. Cellular models are rated for up to nine hours of web browsing using mobile data.

The new iPad mini also introduces fast-charge support, although Apple’s published specifications should be consulted for the applicable charging accessories and conditions.

In other words, the A20 Pro is a more capable tablet, but Apple hasn’t promised a longer battery life.

9. Price and availability: The A20 Pro costs considerably more

Price is where the comparison becomes particularly interesting.

Apple introduced the A17 Pro iPad mini in October 2024 with a starting price of $499 for the Wi-Fi model with 128GB of storage.

The A20 Pro generation starts at $699 for the same storage capacity and connectivity configuration.

ConfigurationA20 ProA17 Pro launch price
128GB Wi-Fi$699$499
128GB Wi-Fi + Cellular$849$649

That’s a $200 difference between equivalent entry-level configurations, representing a 40% increase over the previous generation’s launch price.

The newer model is available in Midnight and Starlight, with 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB storage options. Its US availability began November 6, 2026.

The A17 Pro model has been superseded, so buyers interested in the older tablet will generally need to look at remaining retailer inventory or the refurbished and secondhand markets.

Consequently, its actual current selling price matters more than its original MSRP when evaluating its value.

Apple A20 Pro iPad mini vs. A17 Pro iPad mini: Which should you buy?

Apple’s A20 Pro iPad mini is a much more substantial upgrade than a simple processor refresh. The OLED display, improved performance, thinner and lighter construction, IP67 protection, and faster wireless connectivity collectively make it a more capable compact tablet.

However, the A17 Pro iPad mini shouldn’t be dismissed.

Its 8.3-inch LCD display is still sharp, its processor handles everyday applications comfortably, and it retains compatibility with Apple Pencil Pro. It also offers the same advertised battery life and storage capacities.

Buy the A20 Pro iPad mini if:

  • You want an OLED display with significantly better contrast and HDR brightness.
  • You regularly play demanding games or use graphics-intensive applications.
  • You want better performance for on-device AI workloads.
  • You value a thinner, lighter design and IP67 water and dust resistance.
  • You want Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6 for a more modern connectivity setup.

Consider the A17 Pro iPad mini if:

  • You primarily use your tablet for reading, browsing, streaming, and note-taking.
  • You don’t particularly care about OLED technology.
  • You can find it at a substantial discount compared with the newer model.
  • You already own the A17 Pro model and don’t need its newer hardware improvements.

Ultimately, the A20 Pro iPad mini is the better tablet, but that doesn’t automatically make it the better purchase for everyone. Its $699 starting price is considerably higher than its predecessor’s original $499 price.

For existing A17 Pro owners, the OLED display and improved performance are compelling, but not necessarily reasons to upgrade immediately. For first-time buyers, the newer model makes more sense if its additional features justify the premium.

Apple has finally given the iPad mini the display and hardware upgrade many compact-tablet enthusiasts have wanted. The bigger question is whether buyers are willing to pay $200 more for it.
