Figma is expanding its data residency program to Japan, giving Enterprise customers the option to store their Figma file data locally in the country.
The company announced the move on September 11, saying the new option is designed to help organizations in Japan meet stricter data management, governance, and security requirements while continuing to use Figma’s collaborative design and product development tools.
With the new data residency option, eligible organizations can host data from Figma Design, FigJam, Figma Slides, and Figma Make in Japan. The offering is available to customers on Figma’s Enterprise plan.
Figma says the move responds directly to demand from Japanese customers that want greater control over where their data is stored and managed. The company is positioning local hosting as particularly useful for organizations with stringent data requirements, including businesses in financial services, healthcare, and the public sector.
The localized hosting infrastructure uses Amazon Web Services. For Japan, Figma lists AWS’s Tokyo region (ap-northeast-1) as the primary location, with Osaka (ap-northeast-3) serving as the data recovery region.
Figma’s localization system covers important portions of file content, including shapes, text boxes, sticky notes, frames, components, images, and videos. However, not every piece of information associated with a Figma account is stored locally. Comments, plugins, file names, fonts, thumbnails, some Dev Mode data, and AI chats are among the items that remain outside the localized file-data scope.
That distinction matters for organizations evaluating data residency for compliance purposes. Figma describes the solution as applying to data at rest, rather than data in transit, and published content such as websites and other files made generally available on the internet is also outside the scope of the localization program.
The timing of the expansion reflects Figma’s growing presence in Japan. According to the company, two-thirds of Nikkei 225 companies were using Figma as of June 30, 2026, while Japan ranked among Figma’s five largest markets globally by active users.
Hiro Kawanobe, Figma’s country manager for Japan, said the company had heard from Japanese customers that they wanted the ability to store and manage their data domestically. Figma says the new offering is part of its longer-term investment in the Japanese market.
The company also highlighted several Japanese organizations that welcomed the change, including payment platform Digital Garage, technology and advertising company Adways Group, and the Institute of Science Tokyo. Their use cases span financial services, product development, higher education, and internal collaboration.
Figma has been steadily expanding its localized hosting options beyond the US. Its data residency program already covers regions including Europe, Australia, India, and Brazil, with Japan now joining that list.
For larger organizations, the Japanese data residency option can also be paired with Figma’s Governance+ offering, an add-on to Enterprise that provides additional controls for access management, network restrictions, data governance, and security.
The result is a more locally controlled Figma environment for Japanese enterprises that need to keep certain design and product-development data within the country, without giving up Figma’s cloud-based collaboration workflow.
