Apple Original Films has unveiled the official trailer for The Last First: Winter K2, a new documentary that takes viewers into one of the most dangerous challenges in modern mountaineering. Directed by Amir Bar-Lev, the film follows a 2021 expedition that set out to accomplish something no climber had done before: summit K2 during the brutal winter season.

A dangerous race to conquer K2 in winter

The documentary centers on Icelandic mountaineer John Snorri Sigurjónsson and Pakistani father-and-son team Ali and Sajid Sadpara, who attempted to reach the summit of K2 during winter.

K2, the world’s second-highest mountain, is already notorious for its extreme conditions. Attempting the climb during winter adds another level of danger, with freezing temperatures, unpredictable weather and severe climbing conditions turning the expedition into a life-or-death undertaking.

But the expedition was about more than simply reaching the summit.

As the climbers made their way up the mountain, they found themselves sharing the route with influencer climbers and their film crews, commercial expedition clients and a Nepalese team increasingly unwilling to remain in the background while Western climbers received much of the recognition for mountaineering achievements.

The result is a story that goes beyond the physical challenge of climbing K2.

The human cost behind the expedition

Bar-Lev’s documentary examines the changing culture of extreme mountain climbing while exploring the motivations and tensions surrounding the expedition.

The film looks at questions of ambition, determination, money and power, as well as the class and cultural dynamics that have increasingly shaped the modern mountaineering industry.

That makes The Last First: Winter K2 as much a story about the people attempting to conquer the mountain as it is about K2 itself. The documentary follows the personal stakes behind the expedition while showing how competition and the pursuit of recognition can complicate an already dangerous climb.

The film also revisits the events of the 2021 expedition through a broader lens, turning a race for a historic achievement into a more complicated story about ambition and its consequences.

From Sundance to Apple TV

The Last First: Winter K2 originally premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, where it attracted strong attention for its gripping portrayal of the expedition and the wider world of extreme climbing.

Apple Original Films acquired global rights to the documentary earlier this year, adding it to Apple‘s growing slate of documentary features.

Bar-Lev directed the film, with Howard T. Owens and Ben Silverman producing through Propagate Content. Sean Richard produces for Object Studios, while Sarah Thomson and John Battsek produce for Ventureland.

James Packer, Will Kane, Drew Buckley, Taylor Levin, Isabel San Vargas, Bar-Lev, Kerstin Emhoff and Ali Brown serve as executive producers.
