Samsung is using Gamescom 2026 to make a fairly clear argument about the future of gaming monitors: one screen no longer has to be locked into one kind of player. Its 2027 Odyssey lineup stretches from an enormous 49-inch ultrawide OLED to a 27-inch esports-focused display capable of reaching an eye-catching 1,100Hz.
That is a wide range, but it is also the point. Samsung’s latest Odyssey family is built around flexibility – ultra-high resolution when visuals matter, radically higher refresh rates when reactions matter, and increasingly unusual screen formats for players who want their PC setup to feel more like a cockpit than a desk.
The headline-grabber is the new Odyssey OLED G9, a 49-inch Dual QHD monitor with a 5120 x 1440 resolution, a 360Hz refresh rate, and a 0.03ms gray-to-gray response time. Samsung calls it the world’s first 49-inch DQHD gaming monitor to reach 360Hz, and the combination is aimed squarely at people who do not want to choose between an immersive ultrawide view and fast competitive performance.
Its most interesting feature may be Dual Mode. In its standard configuration, the G9 runs at its full 5120 x 1440 resolution and 360Hz. But users can switch it into a 2560 x 720 mode that pushes the refresh rate up to 720Hz. On paper, that means the same monitor can serve as a wide, detailed display for racing games, simulations, RPGs, and multitasking, then become a speed-first panel for games where split-second movement matters more than pixel density.
Of course, running current games at 5120 x 1440 and 360 frames per second will demand a seriously powerful gaming PC. That is where the lower-resolution high-refresh setting makes more practical sense. It may not be the mode most buyers use every day, but it gives competitive players an option that is difficult to find in the ultrawide category.
Samsung is also leaning heavily into new QD-OLED panel technology. The OLED G9 uses what the company describes as a fifth-generation QD-OLED panel with Penta Tandem technology, a five-layer structure that Samsung says is up to 1.3 times more efficient and offers up to twice the panel lifetime of the prior generation. It also moves to an RGB Stripe sub-pixel layout, a detail that should matter outside gaming because text clarity has long been a concern for some OLED monitor buyers. Samsung claims up to 1,300 nits of peak brightness in a 3% window at 4K resolution, though actual brightness will naturally vary with the content and operating conditions.
The more conventional-looking option in the new range is the 32-inch Odyssey OLED G8. “Conventional,” however, is doing a lot of work here. This 4K QD-OLED monitor can run at 360Hz in UHD, 520Hz in QHD, or 680Hz in Full HD through Samsung’s Triple Mode system.
That makes the G8 arguably the most adaptable monitor in the announcement. A player could use 4K at 360Hz for a visually demanding single-player game, shift to 1440p for a shooter where higher frame rates are more attainable, or drop to 1080p for a competitive title where raw speed becomes the priority. In theory, it replaces the familiar compromise of buying either a beautiful 4K panel or a fast esports display.
The G8 also looks like the best fit for gamers who use one desk for everything. Alongside its 0.03ms response time and VESA DisplayHDR TrueBlack 600 certification target, it includes DisplayPort 2.1 UHBR20, dual HDMI ports, USB-C with up to 98W power delivery, a USB hub, and KVM functionality. That last feature lets a user control more than one connected device with a single keyboard and mouse, which is particularly useful for someone swapping between a work laptop and a desktop gaming rig. Samsung says FreeSync Premium Pro and G-SYNC Compatible support are planned, with certification expected by launch.
Then there is the new Odyssey OLED G7, which may be the most unusual model of the lot. Samsung is calling it the world’s first 42-inch, 16:9 curved OLED gaming monitor. It uses a steep 1000R curve, 4K resolution, a 165Hz refresh rate, and the same 0.03ms response-time claim as the smaller OLED models.
A 42-inch monitor is not for every desk, and 165Hz is modest beside the numbers being thrown around elsewhere in this lineup. But this model is not really chasing esports players. It is designed for the person who wants the scale of a small TV, the contrast of OLED, and a more enveloping presentation for open-world games, RPGs, and cinematic adventures. Samsung says the screen has roughly 72% more display area than a 32-inch Odyssey model, while its curvature brings the edges closer into the user’s field of view.
That distinction matters. There has been a steady blending of TV and monitor categories over the past few years, especially as OLED displays have become more common on desks. Samsung’s 42-inch G7 seems to push that trend further, offering a display that could be just as at home with a controller and a couch-style game as it would be in a more traditional PC setup. Its Glare Free treatment is intended to reduce distracting reflections, an especially practical feature for a display this large.
At the opposite end of the spectrum sits the Odyssey G6. This is Samsung’s straight-line sprint into the competitive gaming market: a 27-inch Fast IPS monitor that can hit up to 1,100Hz at HD resolution or 600Hz at QHD through Dual Mode. It has a 1ms response time and is positioned primarily for first-person shooter players.
The 1,100Hz figure is undeniably extreme. For most people, even 360Hz and 500Hz monitors remain luxury purchases with diminishing returns, because they need a system that can sustain equally enormous frame rates. Still, this type of monitor is not really designed around broad mainstream appeal. It is for serious competitive players who tune every part of their setup – mouse latency, CPU performance, GPU settings, network connection, and display response – in pursuit of a small edge.
Samsung had already introduced the G6 at CES 2026, but the Gamescom announcement raises its final launch specification to 1,100Hz in HD mode and 600Hz in QHD. Unlike the OLED models, it relies on Fast IPS panel technology, a sensible move for a monitor where motion clarity and sustained high-speed performance take priority over OLED’s deep blacks and pixel-level contrast. The Odyssey G6 is scheduled to arrive globally in the second half of 2026; Samsung has not yet given launch timing or pricing for the other 2027 Odyssey displays.
Beyond the hardware, Samsung is trying to make the monitor itself a more active part of the HDR gaming chain. The company says it is working with Activision Blizzard to bring HDR10+ GAMING into the development process for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, with plans to expand HDR10+ GAMING support to more than 20 AAA titles in the first half of 2027. The goal is to help compatible Samsung displays reproduce color and contrast closer to a game creator’s intended presentation.
That promise should be viewed with some caution. HDR on PC remains a messy landscape, shaped by different display standards, Windows settings, game-level implementations, and calibration choices. But better cooperation between display makers and game studios is still a welcome direction. OLED hardware can look spectacular with properly mastered HDR content, but the “properly” part has always been the challenge.
Samsung is also expanding its Odyssey 3D game support through partnerships with developers. The company highlighted Cyberpunk 2077 and Cronos: The New Dawn as titles that will demonstrate its glasses-free 3D display technology at Gamescom. It remains a niche concept, but it is another sign that Samsung sees gaming monitors as more than flat panels with better specifications. The company is experimenting with modes, form factors, and visual effects that try to change how games occupy space in front of the player.
For buyers, the most sensible takeaway is not that everyone suddenly needs a 720Hz or 1,100Hz display. It is that Samsung is making the high-end monitor market less rigid. The OLED G9 is for ultrawide enthusiasts who refuse to sacrifice responsiveness. The OLED G8 is the versatile all-rounder for a premium PC desk. The curved 42-inch OLED G7 aims for large-screen immersion. And the G6 is unashamedly built for players chasing the fastest possible image update.
Samsung says it has led the global gaming-monitor market by value for seven consecutive years, citing IDC data covering 2019 through 2025. The new Odyssey lineup shows why that position matters: the company has enough scale to pursue not just one definition of high-end gaming, but several at once.
