Google has officially updated Google Meet so that iPhone users can join video calls directly from the Safari browser, completely eliminating the need to download the Meet or Gmail apps. This much-needed change finally brings a smoother, app-free conferencing experience to iOS devices.
For years, jumping into a quick Google Meet call on an iPhone was a clunky experience because it strictly required having either the dedicated Meet app or the Gmail app installed. If you were caught off guard without the software, you had to pause and visit the App Store before you could even say hello to your team. This friction is finally gone, making the platform far more accessible for mobile users who want to save storage space or just prefer browsing on the web.
Under the new system, tapping a Google Meet invite link on your iOS device will automatically route you into the call via Safari if the native apps are not currently installed. The process is remarkably seamless, and even individuals who do not have a registered Google account can simply type in their name to request entry into the meeting. There is absolutely no configuration required for IT admins or everyday end users to get this routing to work.
Google kicked off an extended rollout of this Safari capability on June 23, 2026, covering both Rapid Release and Scheduled Release domains. Since this is an extended deployment, it might take a bit longer than the typical 15 days for the feature to become completely visible to everyone across the United States. Once fully deployed, this flexible browser option will be available to all Google Workspace customers as well as anyone using a standard personal Google account.
